Error message when opening word doc: "Not Implemented" (Word for Windows)

Seems I posted too soon the issue has come back...for all Word and Excel files.... launching by double clicking, or Right-Click "OpenWith" on a file in Explorer or on Desktop, gives the "Not implemented" error dialogue box.

Doesn't matter if the file is blocked or unblocked in Properties.
And they all open correctly if opened from inside Word or Excel.

(Powerpoint files aren't showing this behaviour BTW, they will open on double click)

This is an odd problem which I suffer from regularly.  The 'not implemented' error appears after some period of working on my laptop.  At startup and for a period after that, double clicking on an office file (word, excel, powerpoint) opens that file.  After about an hour, double clicking produces the 'not implemented' error.

My workarounds are:

1. Right click the file and use 'open with'
2. Weirdly, dragging the file to the desktop and double clicking there
3. Closing all programs, and right clicking 'refresh' on the desktop sometimes clears the problem.

However, all of these are a pain and I would like MS to get to the root of this problem and write an update or something which sorts it out.

If you open Excel first , will it load the file?

My issue seemed to be an unfinished Windows Update.... try looking in Settings-Update&Security and see if there is an incomplete update. 

If not, I have nothing more I'm afraid.

When I try to access a word doc from the folder, after clicking on it an error appears that only says "Not Implemented".

I have restarted and updated my computer and used the repair function for Microsoft word, but to no avail. I am fortunately able to access the document by first opening word then opening the document that way, but I would like to simply find the file I am looking for and open it that way.

My wife is having the same issue. It is an intermittent issue that comes and goes, sometimes as quick as her calling me into her sewing room, it will not act up. Other times, it happens for a while. Nothing seems to fix it outright and it is really frustrating.

1. She has Microsoft Word 365 and is on the current version
2. The documents are located in My Documents, which is under One Drive.
3. The only add-in installed on Word is Acrobat. I have disabled it, restarted Word, and that did not fix the issue.
4. All documents will open with the Open command from the inside word, but they open with 'Compatability Mode', even with documents that have been created with this version of Word. This is very inefficient for her because she works with documents all day long.
5. I have repaired Word a couple of times. This doesn't fix it either.
6. I have added My Documents to the Trusted Sites.

This is been a problem that I have not been able to find a fix.

I have the same problem with Excel ... a file I have updated with new info and saved comes back as

unretrievable !!! because it is "Not Implemented"  What is going on???? This is really harmful.

It was actually all Office 365 files....

It seems that the Windows update hadn't finished, and I had to go into updates and restart it, and reboot a couple of times until the update "restart required" icon stopped appearing in the notifications area

For now, xls, xlsx, doc, docx files are now opening from Explorer
