Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) High CPU

I am using Office Home & Student 2019 with Windows 10 Home. The June update was recently completed to Version 2005 Build 12827.20268.

After installing this update I noticed that Microsoft Office Click-to-Run (SxS) showed continuous 24% CPU utilization in the Task Manager. Power usage was shown as very high. This did not occur prior to the update. I have metered connection set in the network settings and discovered that the problem goes away if I turn off metered connection and restart the computer.

Does this sound like a bug in the latest update? I have Office 2013 on another computer and there is no problem on that system with metered connection set. I'd be interested if others have seen this problem or have any suggestions.

Hi KenBell6 & Everybody else,

Just got latest update for my version of Office (Office 2016 ProPlus Retail - 32bit).  Found it on Current Preview Channel.  Downloaded it and rebooted my PC and CPU Usage is back to what it used to be.

Don't know if it's a permanent fix, hope it is, but it seems to be working fine so far, after 3 reboots (just to play it safe).  I have several Office apps open, and as you can see above it looks pretty good.  Good luck everyone, let me know if it worked for you.

Two days in a row using Office with no problems.

    Definitively fixed.

Thanks to whoever fixed the problem at Microsoft and to all the people giving help here!

Thanks all for your contributions to this thread. Version 2005 Build 12827.20470 has fixed the problem and I can enable metered connection without problem. Great news!

Click-to-Run has its own folder under Program Files, Common Files, and Microsoft Shared. The folder is 95.7 MB with 3 folders and 116 files.

My other computer with Office Home & Student 2013 does not have the dedicated folder for Click-to-Run and it appears to be a simpler implementation.

Here is an interesting article about Click-to-Run and its introduction in 2010.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/office-suite-issues/office-click-to-run-installation

"Click-to-Run uses Microsoft virtualization technology to contain Office 2010 inside a virtualized application space."

If your office app does not offer the update automatically as happened on my system,

1 select the File option from the ribbon,

2 then select Account (lower region of left hand band), 3 then Update options,

    4 update now.

    Problems fixed.

    Regards

    KenBell6

How can be this a permanent solution?

This is just a hack to avoid a clear BUG.

We need the metered connection when we are using our mobile device with metered connection!

Why do we have to choose between wasting our data plan quota or wasting our battery and/or degrading our PC performance?

It was working before and should be fixed ASAP!

The problem seems to be located at Microsoft Office Click-to-Run service.

Should be either fixed or downgraded o a previous version.

This is just NOT ACCEPTABLE AS A PERMANENT FIX!
