Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

Hi All,

Thanks for the detailed information provided. We would like to make a short summary on this issue to help the other users who might have same/similar issues in this community to quickly identify the issue.

Issue Symptom:

When using the Office applications, they will use a lot of the CPU resources.

In the task manager, the Microsoft Office Click-to-Run(SxS) will consume 25%-50% of the CPU usage.

2.Some of the users reported this issue is only occurring when you are using a wireless connected to a limited network environment like 4G hot spot. Please use a WLAN connection or a LAN connection, see if it helps on this issue.

    Hi Ken,

    Deeply sorry to hear that, please help provide the current version number of your Windows 10.

    You could press Win + R to open the Run window and input Winver to get the information.

    After contacting phone support I have discovered that switching off my metered connection fixes the issue. But it's not really a permanent fix.

    Hopefully the fix will be in the next update

    Office Repair does not work. The only way to stop my CPU from being hogged and the fan on my computer running constantly due the high CPU usage (constant 20-25%) is to disable Click to Run. I can't use Option #2 since my only home internet is from a hotspot (no LAN/broadband possible in my rural area). Click to Run hogs the CPU whether I'm using an Office program or not, so the issue is definitely with Click to Run. I have the latest version of Office and the 1909 version of Windows 10.

    I tried turning off metered connection but that does NOT fix the high CPU issue for me. I am back to manually disabling Office Click to Run to get a quiet computer again and low CPU usage. Even if having "metered connection off did work, the reason I need to have it ON is I don't have an unlimited data plan! I cannot afford to have Microsoft using up all my CPU or data. Windows updates are bad enough.

    Please fix this bug!

    NOTE: I do not use OneDrive since it uses up all our data by constantly running and trying to update files that have not changed in years. It definitely is Click to Run that is the culprit.
