Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

Hi All,

Thanks for the detailed information provided. We would like to make a short summary on this issue to help the other users who might have same/similar issues in this community to quickly identify the issue.

Issue Symptom:

When using the Office applications, they will use a lot of the CPU resources.

In the task manager, the Microsoft Office Click-to-Run(SxS) will consume 25%-50% of the CPU usage.

We are trying to escalate this issue to the related resources for further investigation.

Here are some of the methods provided by the users in this community:

1.Using Online Repair to repair your Office suite.

Repair an Office application

2.Some of the users reported this issue is only occurring when you are using a wireless connected to a limited network environment like 4G hot spot. Please use a WLAN connection or a LAN connection, see if it helps on this issue.

3.Install the available Windows OS updates.

    Hi Ken,

    Could you check if there are any available Windows OS updates for your system?

    According to some other users, updating the Windows system has helped them fixed issue.

    There is an OS update for June win10 1909 that i could apply but i usually refer to Askwoody.com for when to apply a new update. It is a habit that has saved me from several glitches in new releases over the many years i have followed Woody.

    My other laptop which always runs a month apart on updates has the May and June updates to be installed, shows exactly the same problem. 

    I will bring one completely up to date and let you know the result.

    Hi Alex,

    I have now updated 1 laptop to latest available OS update (June 1909 version).

    Although click to run does not have high cpu useage after initially turning metered off, the elements of office, i.e. Excel, Word, etc all consume high cpu useage when metered connection is on and very low vpu useage when metered vonnection is off.

    Definitely not a fix by installing latest updates.

    Hi Alex,

    This is issue is not helped by microsoft PUSHING its new edge browser on to all of my systems. This is consuming a significant amount of my time to get rid of it, has ms not learned from user reaction to pushed upgrades in the past. If there was an easy alternative to  ms this is another resson to leave ms behind.

    Frustrated and extremely annoyed reluctant user.
