Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

Hi All,

Thanks for the detailed information provided. We would like to make a short summary on this issue to help the other users who might have same/similar issues in this community to quickly identify the issue.

Issue Symptom:

When using the Office applications, they will use a lot of the CPU resources.

In the task manager, the Microsoft Office Click-to-Run(SxS) will consume 25%-50% of the CPU usage.

Here are some of the methods provided by the users in this community:

1.Using Online Repair to repair your Office suite.

2.Some of the users reported this issue is only occurring when you are using a wireless connected to a limited network environment like 4G hot spot. Please use a WLAN connection or a LAN connection, see if it helps on this issue.

3.Install the available Windows OS updates.

    For the info,

    the process C2R is always consuming 30% CPU if I use Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot.

    If I run other office application : skype for business, outlook, excel, the 100% is devided between C2R and the running apps.

    ...had the same Problem. The fix was actually pretty easy for me, although it defeats the purpose of another setting:

    I had my internet connection set to "metered connection" in the connection properties. When I set this to off, then the problem goes away. 

    The bug is reproduceable: set the metered connection to on, and the problem re-appears. Set it to off, and the problem is gone. (you need to restart the service and any office program currently running!)

    Hi, 

    I had the same problem. It is completely reproducible. If on a metered connection , Click to run; and each of the office components, uses high CPU constantly, Turn metered connection off, not problems.

    Unfortunately I NEED to run on a  metered connection frequently. In this case, My CPU gets very hot so can't use it for any length of time. Defeats the whole purpose of a metered connection. Microsoft needs to fix this urgently.
