Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

    Hi Alex,

Perhaps you can confirm my supposition. C2R.exe is the software that downloads office updates, hence after i allowed it to complete its work i am no longer seeing issues with this item, probably not until a new update becomes available?

However we still have the issue starting any office app with metered connection on causes high cpu useage.

    Regards Ken

    Hi Ken,

The Click to Run.exe is used to check the available updates and download/install the update package to your Office application.

I think your idea is correct, since you have already updated to the latest version under current channel. I agree this issue is most likely related to C2R checking updates under a metered network connection.

    Same issue :

    1. Repair : no effect
    2. 4G (no LAN available #covid-19
    3. Click-to-run launch at start-up "forever" without any office app with 25% of the CPU
    4. each Office app launched also uses 25% of CPU even idle
    5. I stop "click-to-run in services.msc and change it from automatic to manual start but, still, it restarts when any office app is launched

    Hi Christian,

May I suggest that you try the following, it works on my system.

1 Stop 'click-to-run' in services.msc and set it to disabled.

2 Block 'Microsoft Click to Run Virtualization Optimization' from connecting to the internet (I use Zone Alarm Firewall for this, there is a free version available, the same may be possible in Windows Firewall but I have never used it)

    3 Reset click-to-run to Automatic

4 Whenever you need to open a new instance of any office app, ensure that you disconnect from the internet first. Once the instance is up and running you can reconnect to the internet.

5 If you forget to disconnect first, close that instance, disconnect, then reopen it.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards Ken
