Click-to-Run High CPU Usage

Recently I noticed that there was a background application constantly running on my PC called 'click-to-run'. It runs from the moment I switch on the PC and it never stops and even if I stop the task, it will simply start again. It uses around 25% CPU load and when opening an Office app, like Word, that app uses another 25%. I am using Office 365 which I downloaded through the Education bundle which they offer. Is there a fix for this high CPU load please?

Hi All,

Thanks for the detailed information provided. We would like to make a short summary on this issue to help the other users who might have same/similar issues in this community to quickly identify the issue.

Issue Symptom:

When using the Office applications, they will use a lot of the CPU resources.

In the task manager, the Microsoft Office Click-to-Run(SxS) will consume 25%-50% of the CPU usage.

Here are some of the methods provided by the users in this community:

1.Using Online Repair to repair your Office suite.

2.Some of the users reported this issue is only occurring when you are using a wireless connected to a limited network environment like 4G hot spot. Please use a WLAN connection or a LAN connection, see if it helps on this issue.

3.Install the available Windows OS updates.

    Hi Ken,

    The Click to Run.exe is used to check the available updates and download/install the update package to your Office application.

    I think your idea is correct, since you have already updated to the latest version under current channel. I agree this issue is most likely related to C2R checking updates under a metered network connection.

    Hi Alex,

    Perhaps you can confirm my supposition. C2R.exe is the software that downloads office updates, hence after i allowed it to complete its work i am no longer seeing issues with this item, probably not until a new update becomes available?

    However we still have the issue starting any office app with metered connection on causes high cpu useage.

    If i set metered off before starting any office app i do not see issues from C2R, but I did allow C2R to complete whatever it needed to do while metered was off several days ago. It did take quite a while to complete, unfortunately I did not record how long.

    I have found you can use Windows firewall to block Word/Excel from Internet. But there still remains that Click-to-Run service taking whole CPU.

    That service can be manually stopped, but who wants to do this procedure each time? Such software is expensive even for free.
