A Microsoft file hosting and synchronization service.
I’m still crazy shocked that no one from Microsoft has ever bothered to address this issue or at the very least drop a message on this thread.
Utterly shocking.

I have One Drive installed on my MacBook.
When right-click on the One Drive icon in my Finder and click “get info” it says under size:
172.298.589.945 bytes (39,5 GB on disk) for 57.162 items.
So the way I interpret this is that only 39,5 GB should take space on my Macbook disk. Which is in line with the documents I store offline on my mac (some pictures and music)
However, when I look at the actual disk space used (I click apple icon on home screen, click “about this mac” and then under Storage tab it shows me that my stored documents use 178,4GB. And with that my Mac storage is almost full.
I have no other documents on my Mac, I keep everything in One Drive or ICloud. Icloud is totally online, no files are offline. And One Drive I have only a few files offline.
So why does it seem to take all my storage nevertheless?

Following up on this, as I've recently obtained a new machine running Monterey.
I'm dangerously close to filling my OneDrive for Business capacity at 935GB of 1024GB.
I downloaded the OneDrive app, and it immediately began syncing the entire OneDrive (935GB!) without asking what specifically I'd like to sync. After about 15 minutes, everything has been synced to the machine with Files on Demand feature enabled.
Looking at the System Information screen from Manage Storage, I can see that the On Demand files are no longer registering in the Manage Storage area.
So, the issue we were dealing with back on page 7ish seems to have been resolved from what I can tell.
I'm still angry that I had to sync 100,000s of 0k files before being able to tell the application to not sync those folders! An issue for another ticket.
I can confirm that on a brand new Macbook M1 Pro, a clean install, no migration etc one drive is finally working as it should.
FINALLY!!
I hope anyone else on here who had the issue has also had it resolved by upgrading to Monterey.
Thank you all.

I am finally seeing that I'm not crazy and several other mac users are experiencing the same problem. I have the exact same issue as this post from 2019...we are now a few weeks shy of 2022 and still the same problem? I am on a macbook with Catalina OS, and on-demand One Drive documents that are marked with a cloud are showing locally in my Documents folder taking up space and therefore always getting alerts "Storage Almost Full". Is there a solve for this?
Some of us had the exact problem you are describing as well. This problem disappeared for me when I updated to Monterey. If your macbook supports it, and you are able to despite the "Storage Almost Full" message, try updating your OS to Monterey and see if your issue is resolved. Also, make sure your OneDrive app is up to date as well.
That would be a good way to confirm our suspicions.
