One drive online files take space on Macbook

Hope everyone is keeping well and safe. 

Thanks for picking this up again after my post Erik and great work with providing Microsoft the data they needed and with getting in touch with someone at Apple. I appreciate your effort. 

Any updates from Apple? Have they requested any more data or info?

Thank you also to Todd for helping out. As you quite rightly pointed out Todd, Dropbox did have a similar issue and they managed to fix it- this points the finger at Microsoft now to look into this. 

It is not an Apple issue (I presume, as Dropbox was having a similar issue) although I am glad they are saying they will look into it. If Dropbox managed to listen to their community and resolve the issue I cannot see why Microsoft can't do the same.

The biggest issue here is that they don't communicate or speak to us. A community manager or relations person could easily float around on here and liase with us and keep us updated but it seems not. 

If we knew they acknowledge the issue and are working on it, we can rest assured and wait on an update from them. However we are simply left in the dark.

The response Microsoft have given is unacceptable and it shows they do not see this one drive Mac behaviour as irregular- which is absurd. 

I have 700gb+ showing as being taken up on my MBP because of one drive. I know, technically, no physical space ie being taken but the MBP thinks its taken up and it will cause issues eventually as it has for many others who have posted on this thread.

So here's my latest problem (I was the 5th post in this thread).

I went ahead and turned OneDrive off on my laptop and disabled syncing.

I then tried to delete the files and first get prompted to enter my password -- something I shouldn't have to do to move a file to the trash.

Then when i enter it I get told "The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items".

BS!

I created the items, am an admin on my laptop and i don't have permissions?

I lost 200 Gigabytes to this horrendous basic defect in Microsoft's software. Apple should sue Microsoft for the damage done to their customers.

I recovered the space by using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my boot drive to a second disk and then immediately erasing the boot disk and cloning back again. The cloned disk does not have the lost space and the space is recovered on the boot disk after cloning back.

OneDrive clearly messes irreversibly with the macos file system at a very low level. I would avoid installing OneDrive on any Mac until this dangerous and negligent defect is fixed.

I hate to be another one with the same statement, but "I have this problem, too", however I've managed to drill it down to something in particular.

I found that my OneDrive folder was telling me it was taking up 10GB on disk. I knew my entire OneDrive was much more than this so I started going through folder by folder. I've found one large file that won't disappear when I click (free up space). It's just one 10GB file that's causing all the problems.

Hope this helps towards other info people may have.

UPDATE: - I logged onto OneDrive via a browser and simply moved the problem file to another folder in my account. Once synced to my Mac, the file size on disc went to zero and now I have lots of space!

The exactly same problem happens with my macOS Catalina and One Drive.
