One drive online files take space on Macbook

I have One Drive installed on my MacBook.

When right-click on the One Drive icon in my Finder and click “get info” it says under size:

172.298.589.945 bytes (39,5 GB on disk) for 57.162 items.

So the way I interpret this is that only 39,5 GB should take space on my Macbook disk. Which is in line with the documents I store offline on my mac (some pictures and music)

However, when I look at the actual disk space used (I click apple icon on home screen, click “about this mac” and then under Storage tab it shows me that my stored documents use 178,4GB. And with that my Mac storage is almost full.

I have no other documents on my Mac, I keep everything in One Drive or ICloud. Icloud is totally online, no files are offline. And One Drive I have only a few files offline.

So why does it seem to take all my storage nevertheless?

    Im afraid we are a microsoft company and I cannot use another program or vendor as the company VDI only supports One Drive... so this is not an option for me I am afraid....

    Dear Microsoft Support,

    I have the exact same problem with my Mac at work and just freed up disk space and it did not remove the local files on my mac, at least not in the disk space utility of my Mac. As we have a paied plan for Microsoft products for the whole company I really exüect you to fix this issue??? It has been over one and a half years now and the issue still persists besides about a thousand people complaining about this?

    Did you find a solution for this already or maybe a patch which prevents this behaviour???? I cannot reset my whole one drive, unbind my folder, delete the folder and then set up everything again each time I need to free some disk space...

    Someone provided me with instructions earlier and unfortunately, the issue was not resolved. To pay around $120 ish CAD for a subscription I do not use breaks my heart. I wish I had purchased an external hard drive with that money, or just bought extra iCloud storage. I wish Microsoft would do more to help their customers with Apple products. It is a complete waste of time and money and I would never recommend this to anyone who own an Apple product.

    These solutions don't seem to work though?

    I've moved OneDrive to an external drive and have reinstalled and also upgraded to Big Sur and yet still I have a whole load of my hard drive taken up by some kind of mirror of the OneDrive and I can't find the files to delete them.  Disastrous.  Basically just destroyed about 70GB of hard drive. 

    Can't believe that neither Microsoft or Apple have bothered to fix this.

    Hello,

    I have spent the last hour or so reviewing the information on this thread. I have a 2019 Macbook Pro and have recently upgraded my iOS to Big Sur. I cannot figure out for the life of me how to keep my files online-only. I was wondering if anyone can be kind enough to assist me.
