Microsoft 2016 for Mac Products Crash When Opening

Hi there, my Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint applications crash right after I open them. I can't even access the File/Help/etc menu because the Microsoft Error Reporting prompt opens immediately, and prevents the application's menu bar from opening.

I'm using Mac Mojave v 10.14.3 - the most updated version - and as many have suggested, I went into Microsoft 'Check for Updates' through my Word application (the one that will open), and found I'm using the most updated version.

I've also restarted my Mac and opened in safe mode with no difference.

Here are the crash logs below.

What should I do from here?

Thanks so much!

Hi Michael,

As you probably already know, the 16.16.8 update is now available and this problem has been fixed.

If you have AutoUpdate set to automatically install updates, it is likely this update was automatically installed.

If you have AutoUpdate set to manual updates, you can launch AutoUpdate from any Office application and choose Check for Updates from the Help menu. If none of your applications will open, you can download the update to AutoUpdate manually from this link, then install and run AutoUpdate, which will install the 16.16.8 fixed update to Microsoft Office 2016.

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?linkid=830196

I highly recommend that anyone affected launch AutoUpdate by going to the Help menu in any Office 2016 application and choosing Check for Updates. Remove your installation from Insider programs by unchecking the box that has you join the program. There will never be any future Insider builds of Office for Office 2016. The feature set of Office 2016 is not going to change, and there will never be any future Insider builds.

I have downloaded the new updater, turned off the insider builds option. Returned to 9th March on Time Machine and still have the crash on Outlook although Word and Excel are fine.

Any other thoughts or is it just wait for the new updater?

    Hi Michael,

I hope you don't mind that I edited your earlier reply and marked it as answer. You have the correct diagnosis regarding the cause and the cure, but as I mentioned, uninstall/reinstall is not required. I can't mark my own reply as Answer, and you have the right response (except for the uninstall/reinstall part).

    Hi from Germany,

after 3 days of experiencing the crashes of Excel, Word, PP as described by all others, I decided to re-install my Office package from a clean status deleting the Office programs and environment.

Office programs started afterwards, and got automatically updated, they are now all:

    Version 16.23 (190309)

I deactivated the Insider program, although the programs seemed to be running stable ....

    My Mac is

    iMac mid 2011,

    OS 10.13.6 (17G5019)) High Sierra

    Regards,

    Thomas

He's implying that whatever brakes it is coming through the Insider builds.

So to get out of that, you need to uninstall Office first, re-install the base version, and then do the updates from the regular channel, not one of the Insider channels.

This is what I did (see my post further back in the thread), and it seems to have fixed the problem, and so that correlates with Jim Gordon's post about it being the Insider builds that are the problem.

You do NOT have to uninstall/reinstall to get out of the Insider program. Complete details are here. Note that all you have to do is wait for the next update (after withdrawing from the program). The next update is coming very soon.
