Microsoft Auto Update gives "One or more updates package could not be downloaded" message

This is for MacOS 10.14.5

Microsoft AutoUpdate is v 4.12

Office Updates are 16.26

Worked with first level support to completely clean my Mac of all microsoft products and reinstall latest package.

Ran in SAFE MODE no change.

Ran Cocktail and Disk Utility no change.

Repaired permissions no change.

I post this issue (which I believe is only showing up on my Mac - others in our house don't do this - every time an update occurs. First MAU comes up with an update to itself which doesn't download, then I take a new copy of MAU off the MS website and install it manually, then it works and shows the new updates which then won't download - same issue, so I then download the whole MS office and install it, then everything works again until the next autoupdate which then has the same issues.

Watching the progress bars it appears that the files just don't want to download and save in whatever spot it's trying to put them.

Just to clarify - I have MAU 4.12 now, and I have Office 12.26 installed. Everything is the latest. But MAU runs and says a new MAU needs to be installed and that is 4.12.0 and when it tries to download is when this happens.

The way this usually goes - at least my experience many years ago being in development and managing software services, was that there would be some evidence, conflicting, that the issue was localized - specific to a particular computer, group of computers, operating system, etc. And in this case it is - this works on some Mac OSX systems and some it does not.

So the technical people want to know that it's a Microsoft issue affecting Microsoft users and they in a purest sense doesn't want to invest resources to solve a non-Microsoft problem. That would be wrong. So as long as there might be a little chance that it cannot be a MS problem, it gets kicked to the curb.

Meanwhile notice that management just wants to know the process has been followed. If it affects fewer users and can be ignored through a legitimate argument, then ignore it.

Meanwhile nobody noticed that BAD WILL doesn't need numbers. It really doesn't matter if local or not - who is the best group to fix the problem? The ones who designed the product. Sometimes you have to tell the technical folks to just swallow hard and find the real problem and perhaps install a little sub that clears out a cache or link that's allowing the problem even though it was caused by something apple did. That's how outstanding companies think - NOT ON MY SHIFT.

I've had this problem for 2 years. MacBook Pro Word for Mac_ Office 365 subscription.  I've tried all the things mentioned so far with no success.

another Mac (mini) in my office doesn't have the problem.

Msg to Microsoft: this is such a fundamental thing to get right. I'm not sure what the plan is here... the failure of a software update system casts doubts on the whole system.  I hope this issue is diagnosed and fixed as it wastes a lot of time with failed attempts then having to search for how to find the latest versions somewhere in Microsoft's website.

    please help fix this.

    regards

    RR
