one drive error "your onedrive folder can't be created in the location you selected"

I've reached out to Office 365 support and they said they're aware of the issue and are working on a solution.  I'll post it here when i get something from them.

I can confirm that it was introduced by an update to the OneDrive sync app after build 19.086.0502.0010

It's present in builds 19.192.0926.0012, 19.174.0902.0013 (current production), 19.222.1110.0001 (rolling out fast ring).

My temporary fix has been to download 19.086.0502.0010 from here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/onedrive-release-notes-845dcf18-f921-435e-bf28-4e24b95e5fc0 or direct: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=860987 

Then uninstall OneDrive via programs & features in control panel, take the PC offline, install 19.086.0502.0010 from the download & ignore the connect to account prompts, go to C:\Users*username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive & here we need to deny the client access to the Update & StandaloneUpdater folders.

You will need to create the StandaloneUpdater folder first.

Then right-click the Update folder > Properties > Security tab > Advanced > Disable inheritance > Remove all inherited permissions from this object > OK > Yes to the Windows Security prompt > OK to exit. The Advanced settings will look like this afterwards:

Repeat for the StandaloneUpdater folder.

It's a good idea to disable the OneDrive standalone update task in task scheduler too.

Then go back online & go ahead & sign back into OneDrive, set the folders to where you want them (D:\OneDrive in my case, but whatever your secondary drive is, accept the prompt about the files already there being merged & let it sync back up.

When this is all confirmed as fixed & a new working build is released, you will need to reverse the changes by re-enabling inheritance & OneDrive will update itself.

It doesn't seem too happy about being denied access to the folder & the CPU will spike occasionally as it tries (& fails) to update itself, but this is the only way I've been able to stop it updating to one of the broken new builds. I'm going to keep testing it today to make sure it holds.

Thanks for sharing this, but it didn't work for me.  So far, i've spent a few hours on this and i dont have anymore time for it.  I've allowed the OneDrive app to use my C:\ location but have engaged the "on demand" feature with only a select few folders to sync until a proper solution is found.

What version is your app currently? Mine has stayed as 19.086.0502.0010 after the above procedure after multiple reboots & 8 hours of use today.

You must install that version & make the folder security changes while the PC has no internet connection at all, otherwise it will upgrade itself.
