Microsoft Teams Kills all Network Connectivity During Calls

Despite having a good WiFi or Ethernet connection, regardless of which network I'm on, if I join a Microsoft Teams call, all network connectivity stops working and teams simultaneously reports poor call quality and no network connectivity. All this while on an active call which I can see and hear. Here's a full description of symptoms.

Every time I connect to a Teams call:

  • Incoming call quality is ok. I can hear and see others.
  • Outgoing call quality is very poor. Others say my voice is breaking up.
  • If I unmute and speak for more than a few seconds, I am booted from the call.
  • If I stay muted I can stay on the call indefinitely.
  • I can share my screen just fine, I don't get kicked from the call.
  • Teams periodically puts up a warning symbol in the call controls reporting poor connectivity.
  • Teams puts up a blue banner stating that I have been disconnected from the internet.
  • (Intermittent) Teams puts up a big overlay on top of the whole app saying I have been disconnected
  • The call continues though all of this, including voice and video.
  • All other network connectivity is broken (e.g.: Browsers cannot load pages, network drives stop working)
  • Text chat features work fine (but not during calls, where they fail to work like all other network activity)

The instant the call ends, all the symptoms stop. I can access network resources again. My wifi connection is fine. I've tested using wired networking and encounter the exact same issue. I've also tried various audio devices and disconnecting all peripherals as longshot solutions. No dice. I don't have anything weird on my system as far as I am aware. Teams works fine on other machines but not on my primary laptop.

This issue not only makes Microsoft Teams itself nearly unusable, it knocks my whole system offline for the duration of the call, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm booting into Windows 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13". I have all the latest patches for everything. I've seen two other people here who have what I think is the same issue as mine, but their question threads didn't have any solutions either, and now they're locked.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Any solutions? Any more info needed from me about my setup?

Wireshark includes npcap, which is the apparent successor to winpcap.  Winpcap stopped development some time ago.

I have installed them both (Wireshark, then Winpcap) and got disconnected during my first Teams call, just as I launched Teamviewer.

If someone has better experience with a different install order or a particular selected install, please do share.

    (Lenovo L390 with a Thinkpad USB-C dock gen2 btw).

    Hi All

I think I am on to something with regards to the docks we purchase: Startech DK30C2HAGPD

They say they are rated for 100 Watt power supplies, but they don’t specifically say that you need to provide a certain wattage of power to them in order to run all possible connected peripherals.

I did read that the docks consume 15 Watts of power., which is fine. The issue is that most laptops only come with 65 Watt power supplies. So I think the issue is that we need to supply at least 85-100 Watt power supplies to be able to power all connected peripherals and the laptop through the dock.

Here is what we currently connect:

2 HDMI monitors (they have their own power through normal power cable)

    USB Keyboard

    USB mouse

    Ethernet

I recently changed laptops from HP Spectre x360 to Lenovo T14. I tried using ethernet through the dock and without even being on MS Teams, the ethernet dropped! So what I am guessing is that although the Startech site does not specifically say to use a certain Watt power adapter, an 85-100 Watt power adapter must be necessary.

This make sense if most Lenovo docks come with an 85 Watt power adapter.

Just by chance my manager purchased an extra 85 Watt power adapter for home use (because we are now 1 day in office and 4 days at home) and guess what, his Ethernet and MS TEAMS works through the docks!!!

I need to purchase an 85 Watt power supply to confirm. Can anyone confirm this setup? I honestly think this is the solution (rather than the work-around which is to plug ethernet into a dedicated port on the side of the laptop if your laptop has one. If your laptop does not have one, you have to buy an additional USB-A-to-ethernet dongle)

Only reason we never bought the Lenovo docks was because we had a mix of laptops brands and so we ended first buying cheap Hootoo docks from amazon. Once we settled on two HMDI montiors, we started purchasing Startech docks with 2 HDMI ports. BUT, most stock Lenovo docks are expensive and come with the propriety Lenovo power connector (you know, the yellow one), not the USB-C connector. But again, this all makes sense that the price is high because it include the right Wattage power supply!!!

Please confirm this solution, anyone. =) I will try too, once I can purchase a new 85 or 100 Watt USB-C power adapter.

    Thanks!!

    Hello,

Thank you for this reply. Will try to see if this makes any difference! Good research!

Checked for the Lenovo 40AF RTL8153(lan chip) dock. Power adapter used is 135Watts

My Lenovo hybrid USB-C dock came with a 135W power supply, and my laptop is not charging when this happens.
