Microsoft Teams Kills all Network Connectivity During Calls

Despite having a good WiFi or Ethernet connection, regardless of which network I'm on, if I join a Microsoft Teams call, all network connectivity stops working and teams simultaneously reports poor call quality and no network connectivity. All this while on an active call which I can see and hear. Here's a full description of symptoms.

Every time I connect to a Teams call:

  • Incoming call quality is ok. I can hear and see others.
  • Outgoing call quality is very poor. Others say my voice is breaking up.
  • If I unmute and speak for more than a few seconds, I am booted from the call.
  • If I stay muted I can stay on the call indefinitely.
  • I can share my screen just fine, I don't get kicked from the call.
  • Teams periodically puts up a warning symbol in the call controls reporting poor connectivity.
  • Teams puts up a blue banner stating that I have been disconnected from the internet.
  • (Intermittent) Teams puts up a big overlay on top of the whole app saying I have been disconnected
  • The call continues though all of this, including voice and video.
  • All other network connectivity is broken (e.g.: Browsers cannot load pages, network drives stop working)
  • Text chat features work fine (but not during calls, where they fail to work like all other network activity)

The instant the call ends, all the symptoms stop. I can access network resources again. My wifi connection is fine. I've tested using wired networking and encounter the exact same issue. I've also tried various audio devices and disconnecting all peripherals as longshot solutions. No dice. I don't have anything weird on my system as far as I am aware. Teams works fine on other machines but not on my primary laptop.

This issue not only makes Microsoft Teams itself nearly unusable, it knocks my whole system offline for the duration of the call, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm booting into Windows 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13". I have all the latest patches for everything. I've seen two other people here who have what I think is the same issue as mine, but their question threads didn't have any solutions either, and now they're locked.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Any solutions? Any more info needed from me about my setup?

Well I'm glad I found this thread because I thought I was going crazy

Dell XPS 13 9300 with CableMatters brand USB-C Dock which has a Gigabit Realtek NIC. After 15-20 mins on a call, the network will drop. I can't disable and re-enable the NIC, I must unplug and re-plug it in

I thought it was a NIC issue, but I can run iperf with no problems for 3+ hours, not a single dropped packet

I am on Win 10 2004, Cisco AnyConnect is installed but not connected

Update - I still have the issue, but have made some changes which, unfortunately, didn't have any effect (positive/negative).

    1. Upgraded to Win 10 2004
    2. Tried another dock of the same model - made sure to update its firmware.
    3. Tried another USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 cable - this is not the split-type cable that shipped with one of these docks, but a straight, simple USB-C Thunderbolt 3 cable which shipped with another one of these docks (dock is the same model #, same revision, etc.).
    4. Figured out what the latest version of the Teams desktop app. is (as far as I can tell), and manually installed it. Now running on Teams v1.3.00.14853. No difference.
    5. Changed the interface metric of various adapters so Ethernet is prioritized over WiFi.

At this point, I think it's a driver issue or an issue with Teams (like something that might be present even in the version I'm now running).. Maybe it's an underlying configuration problem with the driver (e.g., 'Green Ethernet', as has been mentioned), or something else.. I'm not sure.

I've been running on the built-in Ethernet port on the T490 for roughly a day and, once again, I have no issues.

    Scott,

We are having the same issue. Using Lenovo X390 and Lenovo USB-C dock Gen2. I have updated everything, all drivers, windows, etc. and it drops ethernet connection during Teams calls. Both the laptop and the dock are new. I have replaced the dock and still no changes. We have tested wires and nobody else in that building is having the same issue.

I find it VERY frustrating that MS doesn't seem to care one bit about all these people having the same issue on multiple different devices, it obviously is intermittent and doesn't happen to everyone (myself included-this issue belongs to one of my users) because I am not hearing complaints from other users in the company with similar devices and setups. I am going to have my user try it on the web Teams version today to see if that corrects the issue.

@Boris_Ger - Fortunately/unfortunately, I don't have KB4549951 installed; instead, I have one of the two updates which superseded it installed, which is KB4556799. That update was installed on May 13, 2020.

BTW, I started using this dock about a month ago. I've updated its firmware, installed UEFI/BIOS updates on the laptop, installed the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock software, and updated (as mentioned) the dock's Ethernet driver from the Lenovo-sourced one (v10.33.419.2019, the latest as of this writing) to the Realtek-sourced one (v10.38.20.117).

I am also running Teams v1.3.00.12058 (updated on May 6, 2020).
