Microsoft Teams Kills all Network Connectivity During Calls

Despite having a good WiFi or Ethernet connection, regardless of which network I'm on, if I join a Microsoft Teams call, all network connectivity stops working and teams simultaneously reports poor call quality and no network connectivity. All this while on an active call which I can see and hear. Here's a full description of symptoms.

Every time I connect to a Teams call:

  • Incoming call quality is ok. I can hear and see others.
  • Outgoing call quality is very poor. Others say my voice is breaking up.
  • If I unmute and speak for more than a few seconds, I am booted from the call.
  • If I stay muted I can stay on the call indefinitely.
  • I can share my screen just fine, I don't get kicked from the call.
  • Teams periodically puts up a warning symbol in the call controls reporting poor connectivity.
  • Teams puts up a blue banner stating that I have been disconnected from the internet.
  • (Intermittent) Teams puts up a big overlay on top of the whole app saying I have been disconnected
  • The call continues though all of this, including voice and video.
  • All other network connectivity is broken (e.g.: Browsers cannot load pages, network drives stop working)
  • Text chat features work fine (but not during calls, where they fail to work like all other network activity)

The instant the call ends, all the symptoms stop. I can access network resources again. My wifi connection is fine. I've tested using wired networking and encounter the exact same issue. I've also tried various audio devices and disconnecting all peripherals as longshot solutions. No dice. I don't have anything weird on my system as far as I am aware. Teams works fine on other machines but not on my primary laptop.

This issue not only makes Microsoft Teams itself nearly unusable, it knocks my whole system offline for the duration of the call, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm booting into Windows 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13". I have all the latest patches for everything. I've seen two other people here who have what I think is the same issue as mine, but their question threads didn't have any solutions either, and now they're locked.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Any solutions? Any more info needed from me about my setup?

This happens to me on my Lenovo L390 through a Lenovo Thinkpad USB-C dock Gen2 when connected via ethernet through the dock.

If I am on WIFI it doesn't happen even if I am also connected to the dock, but with the ethernet unplugged.

We are having this same issue with network loss during Teams calls. Lenovo machines and USB C docks (Realtek drivers). I'm beta testing a new T14 laptop with all newest drivers and still can produce the issue.

Scott that is an interesting find. I am no longer having the issue after many months battling this. I updated the drivers (Lenovo and Realtek) and it has been solid for a while now. My Lenovo Yoga came with Windows 10 Home and we upgraded to Pro using our Enterprise agreement key.

Thanks Scott for the detailed information. Our T490 is only 6 weeks old, the preinstalled Win10Pro was not upgraded to enterprise. One thing I can imagine is that maybe it depends on the sequence the software/drivers/updates are installed.

I will try to setup the most affected Notebook these days and report back, if it helped.

In the past 3 weeks, I moved to a new Lenovo P15 Gen 1 mobile workstation and have had zero issues, using the same Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Gen 2 dock from Lenovo that I was using before.

My old system was a Lenovo T490. The OS was installed from an ISO of Windows 10 Pro 1903, but as I learned, the edition of Windows was changed from Pro to Enterprise via supplying the correct activation key, manually.

I installed the OS on this new system myself, also manually, but using the ISO of Windows 10 Enterprise 2004 and the Enterprise image / index from the .WIM for it. The correct key for Enterprise was supplied right off the bat. All drivers either came from MS Update or Lenovo's Vantage program, installed from the MS Store app. The installed app. stack is identical to what I had installed on the old system and, since it was mentioned here, Jabra Direct is also installed.

I've been in numerous meetings while using the dock's Ethernet cable connected and haven't dropped a single call like I was with the old system.

So, I'm not convinced it's the dock itself, nor its firmware, which I did not update while building up the new system. I think it has more to do with the installed build of Win 10 and drivers. I recommend people explore the idea of backing up personal data, wipe the system, install a newer build of Win 10, install all BIOS/UEFI updates, and ensure that all drivers either come from MS update or the OEM for your system (Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc.).

I'm happy to answer any questions, but, this problem has been effectively solved for me. Hopefully this information helps others.
