Microsoft Teams Kills all Network Connectivity During Calls

Despite having a good WiFi or Ethernet connection, regardless of which network I'm on, if I join a Microsoft Teams call, all network connectivity stops working and teams simultaneously reports poor call quality and no network connectivity. All this while on an active call which I can see and hear. Here's a full description of symptoms.

Every time I connect to a Teams call:

  • Incoming call quality is ok. I can hear and see others.
  • Outgoing call quality is very poor. Others say my voice is breaking up.
  • If I unmute and speak for more than a few seconds, I am booted from the call.
  • If I stay muted I can stay on the call indefinitely.
  • I can share my screen just fine, I don't get kicked from the call.
  • Teams periodically puts up a warning symbol in the call controls reporting poor connectivity.
  • Teams puts up a blue banner stating that I have been disconnected from the internet.
  • (Intermittent) Teams puts up a big overlay on top of the whole app saying I have been disconnected
  • The call continues though all of this, including voice and video.
  • All other network connectivity is broken (e.g.: Browsers cannot load pages, network drives stop working)
  • Text chat features work fine (but not during calls, where they fail to work like all other network activity)

The instant the call ends, all the symptoms stop. I can access network resources again. My wifi connection is fine. I've tested using wired networking and encounter the exact same issue. I've also tried various audio devices and disconnecting all peripherals as longshot solutions. No dice. I don't have anything weird on my system as far as I am aware. Teams works fine on other machines but not on my primary laptop. 

This issue not only makes Microsoft Teams itself nearly unusable, it knocks my whole system offline for the duration of the call, which is incredibly frustrating.

I'm booting into Windows 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro 13". I have all the latest patches for everything. I've seen two other people here who have what I think is the same issue as mine, but their question threads didn't have any solutions either, and now they're locked.

Does anyone have any idea what could be going wrong? Any solutions? Any more info needed from me about my setup?

    that's interesting.

    We use Lenovo X390 and T590 with two types of Lenovo USB-C-Docks...and for three or four weeks we are having the same problem. Network connections crashes during Teams calls on different devices. We tried disabling some Power Management options for the NIC

    • without any success.

    I think this problem started a few days after update KB4549951 was installed.... and there are many problems reported in connection to this update in different blogs... can you confirm that your problems started after installing KB4549951?

    I have a similar problem with a) a Lenovo T490 and b) a Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Gen 2. The dock is the version which uses one 230w AC adapter; it has both the slim tip and Thunderbolt 3 cables at one end of the laptop connection cable which can be split apart from one another.

    In my case, if I use the Ethernet port on the dock, then during a Teams call, my connection dies about 3 - 5 minutes in. If I disconnect the Ethernet cable quick enough, then my network connection will automatically change over to WiFi, and I'll rejoin the call without doing anything else.

    This only happens during a Teams call. If I use Teams to join a live event, as I did earlier today, it's fine; my Ethernet connection (again, using the dock) does not drop. Similarly, outside of Teams calls, the Ethernet connection from the dock is rock solid.

    I updated the Ethernet driver for the dock (displayed as a USB 3 Ethernet adapter) with a driver direct from RealTek in hopes it would improve things; it didn't, unfortunately. This particular device is the same one in many other Thunderbolt docks (Dell, for instance) were people have reported issues on older versions.

    So, I'm not sure what's going on. I haven't seen anything logged in Event Viewer, and there aren't any log entries in Teams' "logs.txt" log file (which should really end in .log!).

    Using MS Teams on a MacBookPro running MacOS Sierra, I had what sounds like the exact same issue. After using the Teams App my email accounts were all offline, I couldn't browse web pages and I couldn't get to my router's login page either. I had to reboot to get back any network connectivity - a reboot fixed it immediately.

    Thanks for the help! Glad you got resolution. However, I am not in a place where I have direct ethernet capability, just wi-fi. Any other suggestions?
