Power Point slide show keep jumping back to prior slide

New MacBookPro.

Just installed Office365.

Using PP to view slides from Multimedia Exercises for Basic Japanese Grammar.

One has to read/respond/click-to-hear-answer/click-to-go-to-next-page/next-question.

If I am idle for a random period of time, it pops back to a prior slide.

Sometimes it happens quite soon after clicking onto a new slide, so it is not a general timeout feature.

Also, the slide it pops back to changes as on proceeds further.  It breaks the basic flow logic of the presentation as to get back, you end up activating some next state you don't necessarily want to.  IE, getting back to read the question makes it think you want to see the answer, but you are not yet ready to see it.

My question is: is this a bug in the slides, or a bug in the programme?

The slides force one to open read-only, and I don't know much about PP so I don't know where to look to see if there is some time-based thing which kicks in if I am idle.

Hi All,

I'd like to share a summary for the issue here which will benefit other community members.

Symptoms:

Power Point slide show may jump automatically back to prior slide 

Environment:

  1. OS: Mojave 10.14.1 (18B75).
  2. PowerPoint version: 16.18 (Wait on a slide for about 30 seconds in full screen presentation mode, the slide will automatically skip to a previous slide)
  3. PowerPoint version: 16.19 (181109) (Some customers fix the issue by upgrading to 16.19, but the other ones still have the issue) (The 16.19 may make the issue idle time from 30 seconds to 10 minutes)
  4. The issue happens to all files
  5. The issue happens in full screen presentation mode but not in presenter view mode.
  6. The issue disappears when all the customers trying to do a screen recording.

Workaround:

Play the presentation in presenter view mode.

Assessment:

Please update the Office to the latest 16.21 version to get the fix.

Hi all,

Thank you all for providing related videos and logs. We have narrowed down the root cause, and we're working with Apple for a fix. 

In the mean time, we have added a temporary solution in the next update.

As a current workaround, if you have more than 1 graphics cards on your device, you can do the following:

    (1) Go to System Preferences

    (2) Go to Energy Saver

****(3) Uncheck Automatic graphics switching(If you do not see this option, you only have 1 graphics card)

We completely understand your frustration with this problem. We appreciate your patience.

    Hi Neo.

    I am not creating the presentation.  It is a read-only one accompanying a book I purchased.

    My assumption is that the authors/editors/reviewers of this book would have found/fixed any issues in the content, as it is essential to the book.

    I find that I only run into the problem on my MacBookPro (laptop) not my Mac Pro (Desktop).

    I thought it might be an OS version issue, but turns out both were same 10.14 version.

    The laptop is the most recent PP version, as I freshly installed Office365 and then checked for an update.  I just checked the Desktop version: no updates available.  I had left it overnight displaying "slide 10".  The laptop version will revert to showing either the first slide, or "slide 8" (not the real slide #) after ~60 seconds.  Desktop: never acts weird.

    I'll PM you with a link to the file in question.  I am not having any luck cut&pasting images nor uploading images for inclusion here.

    Both desktop and laptop were 10.14, and both are now being upgraded to see if this changes things...

    As noted, it doesn't happen to the presenter view, but it certainly does happen to any projected view.

    I have found that I can open the power point presentation in Keynote. I have not yet tried it with the projector, but I haven't had the problem (yet) with playing the slides on my laptop.

    The problem with this solution is that Keynote handles the fonts a little bit differently so I've had to change some slides to get the font spacing to work. Since you are using a "read only" file, I'm not sure it would work for you. But you also might not have too many spacing issues... it depends on the slide.

    Your description is exactly the situation and problem I am facing (except for the thesis defense.) My problems began after I updated to Mojave and then updated my Microsoft Office 365. The problem gave me fits yesterday as I tried to project slides during a class I was teaching.

    I am thinking about seeing if I can transfer my slides over to PDF files and then advance through them page by page. It would not have the transitions, but at least my audience could see the information.

    So far I haven't heard anything from Microsoft about the problem.
