MS 2010 apps disabled on XP OS

Hello nauart. I feel your pain, I have been there.

I am not a computer professional or technician either, and only a moderately competent computer user..

I am not totally sure what particular problem you have. ( For example, I am not sure exactly   what you mean by “...the many listed corrective files”… )

What we have been discussing are updaters that “kill things”,, specifically they kill just Office 2010 in just Operating system XP ##( One of the updates  was apparently supposed to cure the killer updates, but it turned out to be just another killer itself!! ) )

(## They may cause problems  in Operating systems earlier than XP, I am not sure... )

 I doubt that I can solve your problem, but  a  bit of clarity that I can give you  might help a small amount… also , because,  ..  I have a few XP and Win 7 Operating systems on computers with Office 2010 and a few other Office versions……

Based on my experience, and from what I have seen from other reports, my un educated guess is that, if you are  experiencing your   problem with XP and also Win 7, then it is unlikely that you have the issue that we are discussing here and in the other similar Thread, (  https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice\_excel-mso\_winother-mso\_2010/microsoft-office-2010-on-an-xp-os/0cf7643f-1fa0-4ac5-98d1-bcda9dd9461f? )

I am fairly sure that the issue we have been discussing does not effect Win 7. But I will certainly report back if I notice any related issues myself in the future… I suppose theoretically it may be possible that you need to juggle around updates to suit a particular Operating system. But so far, it seems that most peoples experience suggests that you are most likely to have success by getting rid of updates rather than installing them… (  I tend personally to categorise Microsoft Updates and computer viruses as approximately the same thing! ).  

I can’t figure out how to give you a forum post “deep link”, that is to say a URL to a particular comments at these Microsoft Forums to help you navigate, but in this and the other Thread, the shortened version of the entire  story that we have been discussing is this:

If you don’t have these updates on your computer, that is to say they either never were installed, or they were, but you have un installed them, then it is very likely that you do not currently*** have the problem being discussed in this and the other Thread, - These are the currently*** reported “Killers” to best make sure that you do not have:

That doesn’t help you a lot, but if you don’t have those updaters on your computer, then , at least currently***, as far as we know, you will not have the issue that we have been discussing. So it is then at least one less thing for you to worry about.

*** Note however , as Rich Mercer said, you need to.. „…Keep an eye out for more reported villainous upgrades…”.. as our experience suggests that more will be sent out…

( BTW, I personally find these Microsoft forums a nightmare to navigate, I have to repeat myself as there is no clear organised structure , at least which i am aware of, to navigate through and reference to. I expect Microsoft will achieve their goal, ( assuming they have it ) ,  of killing off XP with these killer updates, as Office 2010 is generally regarded as a very stable version often used in preference by many people including professionals. But … I doubt many  users will see these posts, and so be forced to update. I personally like to support development, having once earnt good money myself in research and design. As part of that I tend to buy new versions sometimes, even if I prefer to mostly use the previous ones. But this issue is also making me re consider whether to keep with Microsoft.. For now I still am with Microsoft.

It is one thing not to support an old version. But actively doing things which they must by now know kills older versions, (even if it was possibly not the intention originally),  is another. .. Imagine a car manufacture, sending a software update which improves their newer models, but  that causes the brakes to fail on older models ….  and then continuing to do so after reported accidents.. )

The best advice I can give is to start a new Thread here, or somewhere, and give as much detail as possible to your problem, as I expect it is a different issue to the one in this and that other Thread. Good luck!

I tried the update on a couple of my XP machines and confirmed that it kills Office 2010. De installing and all is well.

My assumption that the problem was caused by Microsoft and not related to the individual computer was correct.

Updates were continuing to be installed on my “Office Home and Student” without my knowledge and the latest update was dated the very day my programs were disabled.

Thanks to the assistance of everyone who responded to my Forum request, and especially: Hojjat Bohlooli who supplied the instructions for removing the offending update, both my XP computers are now up and running my Office 2010 programs properly.

As a conclusion to this matter, and to assist others who have been damaged by this problem, here is the remedial process as provided by Hojjat Bohlooli:

Uninstall recently installed update of office 2010 named KB4461522.  This update breaks compatibility of office 2010 on windows XP.

·        Open 'Add or Remove programs' from Control Panel

·        Select the “show updates” on the top of window

·        Find Update, KB4461522 dated 14 Nov 18 for Office 2010 in the list and remove it.

Reboot computer

Note that it is known to Microsoft that the KB4461522 update is faulty. It has now been revoked, as documented in the article at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4461522/november-6-2018-update-for-office-2010-kb4461522.

Theoretically, upgrading Windows won't touch any document files, and I've never had any problem of that sort in more than two decades of frequent upgrades. However, it's always a good idea -- and highly recommended -- to make a complete backup of the existing files before you start an upgrade. For example, if something hiccups and the computer won't boot at the end of the upgrade, you can restart the upgrade or do a complete reinstall without worrying about getting your files back.

Depending on the size of the files to be backed up, you may want to store them on a cloud service (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), on DVDs, or on an external hard drive.
