OneDrive Files Disappeared

A series of folders are all empty! All of the files are missing. The folders and subfolders are present, but all the files in these folders and subfolders are simply gone. What is particularly odd is that all of these folders have a Date Modified within a very tight range, between 8:59 and 9:19 AM on 8/8/2018:

Trying to recover the files in the OneDrive on-line Recycle Bin, you can see there's a gap between 7/30 and 8/9, where there are no deleted files.

These are very important client files, and we need to recover them. I can't identify anything on our end. Does Microsoft have extended deleted file support?

As I think back to when my files disappeared, I was updating my OneDrive storage area with nested folders containing 20,000 to 40,000 files. I'm guessing that OneDrive software had a stack overflow bug that then caused random things to happen, and deletion of my files was one of the consequences.

But I'll never know since OneDrive support appears not to exist anymore (my case numbers of 4 weeks ago were never replied to, even though their automatic reply guarantees 24 hour turnaround).

Yeah I had a bunch of lost progress on really important files, but was able to get them back when I found out a pattern:

    1. All of sudden, my files stopped being synced and I get the "Saved to this PC" option on the top right of Word, and the Auto-Save clicked OFF.
    2. So I don't want it to be lost, so I clicked Auto-Save On, and clicked my account when the prompt came to save to "my one drive."
    3. This created a duplicate of the file that was completely inaccessible, unlisted anywhere on my pc or search, except for a file search on onedrive.com. I have no idea where it actually was, but  had to manually restore to its proper location.

But now I'm really screwed, because (a) the duplicates or no longer made; the file just disappears with no changes and nothing in revision history, and (b) this is true for all the files on my new pc that were uploaded over past three days. I can't save a single file, period. It won't appear on my pc, it won't appear on my onedrive folder, andit won't appear in my folders onedrive.com.

And here's what's weird: all of the files, 227GB, that were downloaded automatically on to my PC in the last three days since getting my new laptop, *none of them appear on my C drive anywhere.*They appear in the onedriev folder, but yet, when I open any of the office files, it says "saved to your PC," (again with auto-save clicked off) and says they aren't on cloud storage - even when I opened them directly from my onedrive folder on my computer. Totally f'd up.

    Hi Noel,

According to your reply in PM, you have already taken actions to recover your data. Can you recover your data now? Do you still need any help? It would be great if you can share with us your recent updates.

    Thanks,

    Neo

    Hello Neo,

Unfortunately, we were only able to recover top-level files. Files in subfolders cannot be found anywhere. Because of the mapped network drive setup we use, it's impossible to know who deleted those files, so we don't know if the source of the deletion was a particular user error, or if it something on MS's end.

Luckily, these were mostly archive folders, for which we have hard-copy (yikes!) backups. Looking forward, we may consider passing all file-sharing through OneDrive, but we use the mapped network drive solution for internal (not remote) employees is a lot faster and puts less strain on the network.

    Thanks,

    Noel
