I purchased Microsoft Office 2011 along with the purchase of my MacBook. I did an upgrade yesterday only to find that Office 2011 will only run on 32 bit. The upgrade now requires Microsoft Office to run on 64bit. I read in many places that Microsoft has no intentions of supporting this upgrade so therefore, I can no longer safely use this software, that I purchased, on my mac. Microsoft is forcing me to purchase something I have already purchased earlier. I do not care if there are newer versions of Microsoft Office. I purchased Office 2011 and Microsoft should still honor that purchase by providing the 64bit upgrade. I contacted support thru their chat box and was only directed to this site where I can look up or post my own questions. Really great customer support Microsoft! Thank-you! NOT. I wish to have a refund or a product key to another Microsoft Office that will run on Mac at 64bit. I'll be holding my breath awaiting even more outstanding customer service.

Anyway, I was looking at signing my son up for Windows Office 365 for free using his school account but his school haven't signed up to it so it's a no go.

It's not a trial! Students and teachers are eligible for Office 365 Education, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and now Microsoft Teams, plus additional classroom tools.

Good point, other industries don't wrap their stuff in contracts that prevent resale!!! (and whilst we are at it, the pages and pages of T's and C's tied to the installation of software are a joke). Some (smarter people) have standardised such licensing agreements (GNU) whereas others continue the comedy!

Following your automotive analogy, the ONLY REASON I need to have office on my private laptop is because my it is the standard used by my employer. MY EMPLOYER PAYS for an office license that I use during working hours and yet I have to pay again to use the same software on my own time (IN ORDER TO WORK FROM HOME). If it wasn't for this I would certainly use an alternative office solution. This feels like having a car that I can only use in certain circumstances.
Also, just to be clear, many software vendors DO include free upgrades with their product!
Your answers are doing a great job of making me even more pissed off at the behaviour of microsoft, especially as you are presenting irrational and incoherent arguments.
Perhaps I should take this topic to the European Union / WTO as an issue and let them continue the discussion?
It's not just software makers who stop supporting products after a specified period of time. Automobile manufacturers, appliance, shoe, clothing, housewares, tools, and manufacturers of other goods all do the same thing. It seems that every manufacturer has support limitations. It's ridiculous! Everything should have FREE lifetime support. Contact your government officials and demand change!
I don't expect or need any free support for my shoes, clothing, etc. Automobile manufactures provide spare parts only. They are obliged to by law. You can always sell your car, fridge or any other appliance. It looks like you are not aware what the problem is.
