Hybrid Migration from Exchange 2016 to office365

Hi MS,

I am in the planing phase of doing 10 users Pilot Hybrid migration to office 365 in E3 plan using our Volume licence.

We have two 2016 exchange servers running in DAG

We also have email filtering done via Mimecast and for purpose of this exercise i want to leave email filtering to mimecast and not use EOP.

I want to get a clear idea of exact steps I need to take to configure this.

However, before I do anything i want to make sure it does't affect our SMTP or any other users from reading tons of articles and some previous experience with office 365 this are the steps i think needs to be performed.

  1. use exchange server deployment assistance

 - check prereq - all good

My questions  Questions are 

On step 14

If i add this TXT record this will not affect any mail flow this is purely for domain verification? 

Question 2

on the step 15 -29 here

will that affect any existing mail flow or existing connectors as we have few there

Question 3 

overall understanding is mailflow will still be going through exsting exchange server and other 240 users will not be affected and not other server or services such as smtp, scanning service will be affected due to this. 

We never need to change MX records and we don't have to make any changes to mimecast?

Please clarify these ASAP, would be really appreciated.

    Hi Erick,

    No senairo is different

    This is a result of a company acquiring another company

    abc -- acquired xyz

    so user1@abc will become user1@xyz

    Rather then exporting abc user's emails to pst and then importing into their xyz account.

    I am trying to use connected mailbox/account in office365 to achieve this.

    Aliase will not work as its different domains and not without bringing their domain into xyz's o365 tenancy.

    Hi Roy,

    Thanks for your explanation.

    About the connected mailbox, may I know whether you set up the connected account? If so, all emails for the connected mailbox will go to the destination’s inbox.

    If the user1 is the same user in the organization, I think you can just change the domain name and the original domain (abc.com) can be changed to a proxy address. Here are the steps:

    1. Choose Users > Active users in Portal.
    2. Edit the related user.
    3. On the Edit email addresses page and in the Alias part, you can type in the new alias and click Add.
    4. Click “Set as primary” for the alias (******@xyz.com).

    About the subfolders

    if a user1 has mailbox like this 

    Inbox

    -- Folder A - Emails inside this folder

    ---Folder B- Emails inside this folder

    ---Folder C- Emails inside this folder

    I want to move this ******@abc.com to different domain ******@xyz.com by using connected mailbox in office365

    User1@xyz is the same user but has empty mailbox

    So once i run the connect ******@abc.com to user1@xyz domain i need all his inbox and his subfolders to come across exactly the same.

    Inbox

    -- Folder A - Emails inside this folder

    ---Folder B- Emails inside this folder

    ---Folder C- Emails inside this folder

    Does that help clarify the question?
