"The file 'name of file' may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? Save a copy. Overwrite changes."

I've been using Excel 2016/Office 365 and just recently, I started getting this message: "The file 'name of file' may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? Save a copy. Overwrite changes."

I'm the only one working in my file. It is stored on the OneDrive for Business, which is the company supported.

How do I keep this message from appearing?  Or WHY is this message appearing?

I saw a similar post for Excel 2013, but no help was actually given.

Hi All,

We've contacted the related team and would like to share the latest updates here:

For Consumer products (e.g. Home,Personal,University), the issue should has been fixed in Office version 8229.2103.

For Enterprise products (e.g. Business Premium, Enterprise), the issue will be fixed very soon in few days, the expected Office version number is 8201.2140.

Thanks,

Jim

    Hi All,

    We’re seeing reports of an issue where if customers are on certain builds of OneDrive for Business and Office 2016, they will get an error in Excel.

    Issue:

    ==================

    When attempting to save an open Excel file the 2nd time, and the file is synced with OneDrive for Business, and the “Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open.”, users will receive the following error.

    Cause:

    ==================

    The issue appears to be caused by a regression in either the OneDrive for Business Sync client, or Office 2016.

    Resolution/Mitigation:

    ==================

    Through internal testing, and testing with live customers, the issue appears to be fixed in newer builds of both products.

    Here are the steps you can take to mitigate the issue.

    Patch OneDrive for Business beyond 17.3.6935.0609.

    Typically the next patch level is 17.3.6936.0614.  (For the version details, see New OneDrive sync client release notes)

    Patch Office 2016 beyond 16.0.8201.xxxx.

    Typically the next patch level is 16.0.8229.xxxx.

    It’s critical that both products are patched beyond both builds mentioned above, or the issue will continue to reproduce.

    Please also note that OneDrive builds mentioned above which should resolve the issue are still on the Insider track, and are not generally available.

    At this point there is no ETA on when the OneDrive build will become generally available. We will update here once we receive any updates

    Best Regards

    Sky
