I've been using Excel 2016/Office 365 and just recently, I started getting this message: "The file 'name of file' may have been changed by another user since you last saved it. In that case, what do you want to do? Save a copy. Overwrite changes."

I'm the only one working in my file. It is stored on the OneDrive for Business, which is the company supported.

How do I keep this message from appearing?  Or WHY is this message appearing?  

I saw a similar post for Excel 2013, but no help was actually given.

We've contacted the related team and would like to share the latest updates here:

For Consumer products (e.g. Home,Personal,University), the issue should has been fixed in Office version 8229.2103.

For Enterprise products (e.g. Business Premium, Enterprise), the issue will be fixed very soon in few days, the expected Office version number is 8201.2140.

    Hello, I am another user that is also experiencing this problem. It definitely seems like an issue with a recent update since it only started a few weeks ago for many of us.

    I don't want to have to edit my registry, but I would love to give Microsoft any logs, screenshots, or other info to help you guys figure the bug out!

    Your Welcome:-)

    Yep, unfortunately this solution is sort of trade-off. You get rid of this annoying pop-up, at the same time losing top O2016 feature of co-editing documents. So, your choice (not mentioning that it is a bit embarassing for MS).

    As far as I could find out, you can share documents but not simulatnously edit them (in offline application).

    I am trying the cache clearing flag first. If necessary I can turn off the syncing as suggested by GrzegorzSW's . 

    I don't particularly want to share editing with others, but I definitely want to share edits with myself, made on different devices*. I.e. I am desperate to be able to edit files on my Android tablet/phone and have them automatically synced with ODB and edits made on the PC.  I thought Office 2016 was offering that, but so far it is just a fantasy.

    I just find it incredible that to get Office 2016 to work, I have to

    • play in the Registry and/or
    • disable sync features that are advertised as the main reason to upgrade and/or
    • disable my virus checker.

    I deliberately waited 1+years to upgrade, and assumed the product would be stable by now.

    This solved my problem :)

    However, if I would want to share a file (I very rarely do), I guess I would have to change the settings back?
