Cursor disappears (only) over the italic texts (on PC)

Try going to Display Settings>Advanced scaling settings> and creating a custom scaling for 5% more than what it is currently set at. 

I found a temporary solution that doesn't fix the problem but definitely makes it more tolerable while we wait for Microsoft to address that it's an issue on their part. 

Prior to needing to need to move the cursor to a specific area in italicized text, just quickly press Ctrl+A to highlight everything in the document. This will at least allow you to be able to see where the cursor is temporarily.

If your Office application such as Word isn't working correctly, sometimes restarting the application would fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you can try to repair Office. When you're done, you might need to restart your computer. Here's how to repair Office from Control Panel:

1. Right-click the Start button, and select Programs and Featureson the pop-up menu.
2. Right-click the Microsoft Office product you want to repair, and select Change.
   • Note: You'll have to repair the entire Office suite even if it's just a particular application you want to repair such as Word or Excel. If you have a standalone app, then you can search for the application by name.
3. From the How would you like to repair your Office programs screen, select Online Repair to make sure everything gets fixed, and then select Repair. The Quick Repair option is also available, which runs faster but only detects and then replaces corrupted files.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete.

I'm absolutely amazed this problem still persists. I'm using a Microsoft surface with up-to-date OS/ drivers and 365 up-to-date Word.

How do bugs like this persist with Microsoft hardware running a Microsoft software program on a Microsoft OS? For the costs involved this it totally unacceptable.

Oh and Microsoft - maybe have a crack at the million display scaling problems too. Sticking a great display into a Surface Pro/ Book is pointless if it doesn't play nice with external displays, which are still essentially mandatory for real business use and still typically 1920 x 180 (i.e. lower resolution than the native resolution of the Surface).

Hello Microsoft, we are not the only people with this problem...  This is absolutely ridiculous.  You've been working on this product for 33 years.  Fix it.
