Microsoft Word attempts to save to Sharepoint instead of local drive

Hi,

When I open a document in Microsoft Word (Office 2016, 365 Pro, Windows 10) and attempt to save it using the F12 save-as function, Word attempts to save the document in Sharepoint, even though I open it on my local drive. I could previously fix this issue by unchecking the "Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open" box in OneDrive options. However, this behaviour still happens sometimes. Upon further investigation with a Microsoft support agent (case number 1XXX2), I believe this behaviour now only happens when I just created a document and it is still uploading online.

In other words: if I open a Word document on my local drive but that it is still showing the upload icon (meaning it's uploading to the cloud), then Word will open a Sharepoint version instead. As long as the document remains open, Word will by default propose to save in Sharepoint rather than on the local drive. Is this a glitch or intentional feature?

Issue description:

If we uncheck the option : Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open in OneDrive sync client and make some changes to a document stored in OneDrive, the changes will attempt to save to SharePoint first. The expected behavior is that changes will be saved to local PC first when we close the document.

Current status:

The issue is fixed in OneDrive version 18.025.0204.0007. You can install it from this article: New OneDrive sync client release notes

    Just started seeing this issue over the last 10 days; it's infuriating; had to write a user manual yesterday, and i reckon I spent well over an hour just going round in circles with this issue. One Drive periodically insists on saving to SharePoint, even though Office (Word 2016) is set to save locally; it then doesn't save the file (have lost 2 files recently and had to start again until I realised what was going on, then lost pages when I realised it wasn't saving the changes during construction). The Upload Agent doesn't show what's recently uploaded; I get "Read-Only" and "Enable Editing" (due to internet-based files) warnings, and when I go to save a document; it pushes me to SharePoint (which I don't use) to save (even when using CTRL+S), opens a "Save As" window, when I try to save; I get a "this file is read-only" error (shouldn't be). Goes round in circles. Saving can also be slow; a pain when you're in the habit of forcing a CTRL+S periodically, for good measure. Between Onedrive and Sharepoint, my Company's productivity has noticeably slumped, so I'm taking us back to Dropbox and good old raided file server (We only started using SP and OD because it came with our 365 email package). Not good. In the end; I switched to a non-OneDrive PC with Word and just used that to continue the document; at least I could get on with my work instead of bug hunting. It's a shame, as we were looking forward to using an integrated cloud system for sharing access to files and folders, but I can email a document to a colleague faster than they can find it and open it in SP cloud during meetings. It's not just a nuisance; it's messing with people's livelihoods. My manual took almost 2 hours longer than planned to complete as a result of lost pages and save loops. Got more to do, so I'll use a local-only machine, and copy across when complete.

    My windows is up to date, as you can see below:

    Yet, I still have the old version, build 17.3.7294.0108. I asked a link to the Microsoft Engineering I am working with for this case and he says there is no such build currently. Guys, can you provide me with a screenshot of your OneDrive settings (version build 18.025.0204.0003) so I can show him?

    Hi Remboy,

    OneDrive will be updated by itself through the Windows update. So Is your Windows update up-to-date? 

    Meanwhile, we have no direct link about the version 18.025.0204.0003, you may consider the following:

    1.Make sure your Windows has the latest updates and wait for OneDrive updating.

    2.Monitor the article and wait for the direct link.
