Microsoft Word attempts to save to Sharepoint instead of local drive

Hi,

When I open a document in Microsoft Word (Office 2016, 365 Pro, Windows 10) and attempt to save it using the F12 save-as function, Word attempts to save the document in Sharepoint, even though I open it on my local drive. I could previously fix this issue by unchecking the "Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open" box in OneDrive options. However, this behaviour still happens sometimes. Upon further investigation with a Microsoft support agent (case number 1XXX2), I believe this behaviour now only happens when I just created a document and it is still uploading online.

In other words: if I open a Word document on my local drive but that it is still showing the upload icon (meaning it's uploading to the cloud), then Word will open a Sharepoint version instead. As long as the document remains open, Word will by default propose to save in Sharepoint rather than on the local drive. Is this a glitch or intentional feature?

Thanks,

Hi All,

We'd like to make a summary about the case, so every community member who comes across this thread will easily find the information:

=================

Issue description:

If we uncheck the option : Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open in OneDrive sync client and make some changes to a document stored in OneDrive, the changes will attempt to save to SharePoint first. The expected behavior is that changes will be saved to local PC first when we close the document.

Current status:

The issue is fixed in OneDrive version 18.025.0204.0007. You can install it from this article: New OneDrive sync client release notes

=================

Regards,

Sky

    THANK YOU! This is a great workaround - the only problem is that as of now I don't know any group policy that would be able to fix it for all our users.

    Microsoft has been ZERO help on this issue. That Office sync setting is completely broken for MONTHS!

    I just had a call with Microsoft tech support as well. After showing him what was my problem (waiting for the cloud in both file open and file save) he told me to rather open files from Win10 file explorer than from the Word/Excel/PowerPoint recent files menu.

    The same conclusion came up here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice\_excel-mso\_win10-mso\_2016/how-to-stop-the-uploading-to-sharepoint-dialog/1d22bbb2-4163-4cee-b0d1-a5fbbe3208a6?messageId=c9f3c276-830a-4b8b-8b6f-b7b765659dd0

    I don't like this solution at all and it most likely won't help with file saving issues. I am now seriously considering the workaround offered by Jeff where FileCoAuth.exe is disabled and renamed... Also, our company management is seriously considering of changing to a different software (like Google docs).

    So just got off the phone with the Microsoft support rep.  He referenced this article:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/collaborate-on-word-documents-with-real-time-co-authoring-7dd3040c-3f30-4fdd-bab0-8586492a1f1d

    And he actually had the nerve to say this was a deliberate change and that it's by design.  That's TOTAL garbage.  Oh, and he said this despite his additional statement that he was unable to reproduce this despite so many of us seeing this on 100% of systems.  I've now asked that my case be escalated to an actual Microsoft employee, the one who's been handling the case is a contractor.

    As for uservoice, folks, they don't care, I really believe that.  You're strictly limited to the number of votes you have and once you've use those your opinion no longer matters.  If they really wanted everyone's opinion we wouldn't be so limited.

    That's TOTALLY ridiculous.  Like I, as an IT manager, have so many opinions/ideas before I run out of any more good ones.  This is here to placate critics that Microsoft doesn't listen or care about users' views, but it's VERY clear they don't care or we wouldn't be so limited.

    I have exactly same issue. Very frustrating as we are operating in a developing country where internet connections are slow and expensive. Any resolution to this yet Microsoft? Don't tell me to re-sync everything again as all our +50 users have the same issue.

    Yes when on a slow internet connection the problem gets worse.  Our users here have certainly reported that.  Most pause syncing when the internet connection is slow.  It's extremely frustrating when there is delay to open a local file just because it is sitting in your local OneDrive folder.

    "Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open"  unchecked in all cases.
