Your workbook is too large. Try to divide that workbooK into two. Example: If you have a years worth of data, split that up into 6 months.

Hi,
I am experiencing a problem with Excel 2016 that is really frustrating.
I am working normally in excel 2016, when all of a sudden I cannot type anything into a cell. If I press Ecs nothing happens. I do not have macros, nor protected sheet or cells. I am working with multiple (2 or more) open excel files at the same time. I tried to figure out, if I press some combination of keys that would cause this, but found nothing. I, however, can move the mouse over the sheet and click different cells. I think the arrow keys work as well.
The strange thing that always "solves" the problem is pressing Enter. Pressing the Enter opens another Excel file that is already opened, and after simply going back to the first one, I then can work on normally. This can occur once, twice but sometimes even 10-times in a single day! Just terrible.
This is time demanding, many times I write into a cell and then see that the cell is still blank, I press the enter to make it work again, going back... - I cannot work like this.
When I was working with the same files in Excel 2013 and 2010 I hadn't have experienced such problems.
I already read some other forums with people experiencing the same problem, but haven't found any solution yet.
Do you have any?
Thank you!
P.

I have the same problem, it's so frustrating. It's a newer version of excel too. I have to switch to another spreadsheet and type something on it and then I can go back and enter into the other one.
Same issue with me and like many others this bug has been with me for years. It happens very regularly on my home PC but not all the time, sometimes weeks with no problems and then every other entry will fail and I have to go to another sheet or workbook before I can enter data. No fancy macros or the like in use but it seems (not 100% sure) that it happens more often when I have more than one workbook open. Conversely, the 3 PCs at work rarely suffer the problem. All 4 computers are on Windows 10 and Office 365.
I get fed up with new ribbons, new (useless to me) programs like Sway and Yammer when this basic and highly annoying bug remain version after version after version. Just give me a basic core program that works reliably and I'll be a much happier bunny.
I will certainly try disabling auto-save, thank you.
I have had this same issue for at least 4 years, but I though it had to do with running GL wand with Oracle. I no longer use GL wand with excel and I am still having the problem and it has now become more frequent. I have always had the work around of clicking in another tab in the same spreadsheet or clicking in a cell in another workbook. I have tried a number of different other things t resolve the problem. Saving the file, closing it and then reopening it works for a little while, but not permanent. The one thing that seemed to work the best was to disable auto save .
