Issue:
When opening an Office application, you may see the following error message:
"Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled. Microsoft Office will now close."
IMPORTANT: This error appears if you have this Office 2016 build: 16.0.7167.2040. If you don’t have this specific version and you’re getting this error, or you’re getting a different error, we recommend you create a new post. To check your Office version, choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program in the list and check the version number.
Status: Fixed
This licensing issue has been resolved in Office 2016 version 16.0.7167.2055 or later. To get the latest update, please run an online repair of Office 2016:
IMPORTANT: Please choose the Online Repair option instead of Quick Repair. If you run Quick Repair, the latest build version doesn’t get installed. 3. Restart the computer again and open the Office application. 4. Click File > Account, and verify the Office version under Office Updates in the Product Information section. It should be a newer version than 16.0.7167.2040.
If you’ve done the above step and you continue to get the same error message, please do the following:

Dear Microsoft - FIX THE ISSUE.
I am having the same issues. I am at the current update they say to have. I did an online repair and it completely re-installed Office. STILL having same problem. Completely Unacceptable! I need to get work done!
This is not acceptable! The fixes you have explained do not work either,
I use my computer for work, not play!!!
the ONLY items I need on the darn thing are my office products. Which I have clearly purchased. Then with this computer the only way I could have them was by purchasing Office 365.
Hum lets see, ever since Microsoft did two different downloads I've lost my use of something I've personally paid for. In turn I've lost hundreds if not thousands of dollars in work. Honestly, when I can not get into my previous work, I loose thousands if not millions. I do not believe the public is aware that if they don't pay a yearly fee to Microsoft they CAN NOT open anything they have already created. This is even when they owned the product it was created with.
The first time it took a full day on the phone with Microsoft IT to repair it. This time I'm going to take it to someone local. Either way after losing time and money I'm pissed

I found this in another Microsoft forum. Maybe it will help people here. Why it hasn't been posted here I don't know. I have not tested it because I am not using the 365 version, but I am considering trying it with regular Office 2016. Here is the post and the link:

Hi Dyan,
I suggest you perform the steps below and check the result.
1. Remove Office 365 related credentials. To do it, open Control Panel >Credential Manager > Windows Credential> Generic Credentials, then delete any items which contains MicrosoftOffice15_Data orMicrosoftOffice16_Data.
2. PressWindow + R, type inregedit >enter, and check the location:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities
Then delete any folders under identities.
If you are using Office 2013, please replace16.0 with 15.0.
3. Reset Internet Explore settings. Close all Internet Explorer, then start Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet options>Advanced tab >Reset > in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset > Ok > Restart your PC to apply changes.
4. Try signing in Office application with your Office 365 account again.
If the issue persists, I would like to collect the following information:
1. A screenshot of the error message if any one.
2. Regarding "We don't see however the subscription option as I believed we are using the company license."
How many users in your company have this issue?
3. When did you encounter this issue? Did it occur when you opened document from SharePoint online or when you signed in? If neither is your case, can you share more detailed information with us?
4. If possible, we still need the screenshot of your subscription. To check it, log into the Office portal > click your avatar in the top right corner >View account > Subscription.
5. A screenshot of the Office version. To check it, open one program, then clickFiles >Account. You will see the version just under Office Updates.
Regards,
Linda
