FIXED: Error: “Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application” and application closes in Office 2016 (Build: 16.0.7167.2040)

Issue:

When opening an Office application, you may see the following error message:

"Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled. Microsoft Office will now close."

IMPORTANT: This error appears if you have this Office 2016 build: 16.0.7167.2040. If you don’t have this specific version and you’re getting this error, or you’re getting a different error, we recommend you create a new post. To check your Office version, choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program in the list and check the version number.

Status: Fixed

This licensing issue has been resolved in Office 2016 version 16.0.7167.2055 or later. To get the latest update, please run an online repair of Office 2016:

  1. Restart your computer. Don’t open any Office applications when you’re back on your desktop.
  2. Run an online repair of Office from the Control Panel.

IMPORTANT: Please choose the Online Repair option instead of Quick Repair. If you run Quick Repair, the latest build version doesn’t get installed. 3. Restart the computer again and open the Office application. 4. Click File > Account, and verify the Office version under Office Updates in the Product Information section. It should be a newer version than 16.0.7167.2040.

If you’ve done the above step and you continue to get the same error message, please do the following:

  • Choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program, and check the Office version.
  • If the Office version isn’t 16.0.7167.2040, create a new post with the error you’re getting along with the exact Office build version.

    MS just did lengthy update without notice, warning or permission. Now cannot open excel. Says cannot verify license. I realize probably just need reboot BUT won't that automatically activate Office 2016? WHICH IHATE. It did this upgrade a few months ago and totally screwed my computer up, took two days of MS tech to finally fix, and the "fix" was to uninstall 2016 and restore 2013. I turned off all auto updates and yet today, alas, here we go again.

    Anyone know if this will "automatically" force the Office 2016 update? Go help us...

    That's great Microsoft but it only works for a few days then the error pops up again.  Just had Microsoft reinstall Windows 7 and Office 365 and the "shared" Office 365 works for a day or two, then this error pops up again.  VERY frustrating.  Are you seriously telling me that all the software engineers at Microsoft cannot fix this?   Really?

    Office CANNOT find My license... but "works" ...corrupting my files

    Dear Office users and dear Office 

    I didnt reactivate my office license and I was expecting that Office would not work, however Office let me view and open Word Office Files. So I proceed using it and send my CVs for job applications in Word format. However in meantime I understand that every file that I've send was corrupted. I lose my chance in like about 10 companies that I have applied. Lucky me, one of the company write it me back so I can know that there is a problem. Further more even if I try to convert a Word file in PDF, the PDF still cant be opened after is send via mail, 'cos its corrupted to.

    Also the upgrade or updater of Your dose not working properly and now I'm stuck in nowhere.

    So when Office displays the message "we couldn't find your license ... " etc. please say that you also corrupted the files so we cant use them until pay.

    Note: this is feedback-sharing of my case...

    One of our office computers just started doing this after auto upgrading to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. I tried all the updates to the point where Office comes back with a message stating it is up-to-date. Also tried all different Office 365 builds, including Insider Fast. Is this going to be fixed soon???
