Issue:

When opening an Office application, you may see the following error message:

"Microsoft Office cannot find your license for this application. A repair attempt was unsuccessful or cancelled. Microsoft Office will now close."

IMPORTANT: This error appears if you have this Office 2016 build: 16.0.7167.2040. If you don’t have this specific version and you’re getting this error, or you’re getting a different error, we recommend you create a new post. To check your Office version, choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program in the list and check the version number.

Status: Fixed

This licensing issue has been resolved in Office 2016 version 16.0.7167.2055 or later. To get the latest update, please run an online repair of Office 2016:

  1. Restart your computer. Don’t open any Office applications when you’re back on your desktop.
  2. Run an online repair of Office from the Control Panel.

IMPORTANT: Please choose the Online Repair option instead of Quick Repair. If you run Quick Repair, the latest build version doesn’t get installed. 3. Restart the computer again and open the Office application. 4. Click File > Account, and verify the Office version under Office Updates in the Product Information section. It should be a newer version than 16.0.7167.2040.

If you’ve done the above step and you continue to get the same error message, please do the following:

  • Choose the Uninstall a program option in the Windows Control Panel, find your Office program, and check the Office version.
  • If the Office version isn’t 16.0.7167.2040, create a new post with the error you’re getting along with the exact Office build version.

Gosh this is really impressive.  My install got stuck at 90%.  I tried all of the various fixes.  None worked.  I uninstalled and reinstalled several times including using the uninstaller fixer.  So when I could not get the license to work, I assumed it was because of the 90% error.  But I finally found your virtual disc installation and that worked flawlessly.  But still the license failed.  So I was wrong.  You didn't have a major defect in Office Installation.  You had two of them.  Congratulations on your fine job.  Oh, and by the way your stupid updates don't fix the problem.  They just put you in an endless loop of trying to redeem the license on line.  And even if it did work your entire user interface sucks.  The key used to be big and bold when you entered it.  But now it is tiny.  And you cannot edit a typo without backspacing from the very end of the key to where you made the typo.  I do hope Google puts you guys out of business.  It will take a while but it will happen if you keep this garbage up.  If this isn't fixed within a day or two, I am sending it back to Amazon for a refund.

    Could you please help me.

I've tried the above and it still does not work.

I have the correct product code and my correct Microsoft email address and password. And still your failure message says that this is not correct and won't me log in back to my Word documents, which I urgently need.

You **** ****! I spent all damn day writing a paper only to have your piece of **** program flip the **** out and close and I lost EVERYTHING! It didn't autosave, it's not in the folder for unsaved documents, it's GONE and now I have to start all over.

You **** **** clowns have one job... to make sure this **** works and you can't even do that right! Bring back MS Office on a disc so I can load it on my computer and be done with it! I don't want to have to trust my time and energy to the hands of some incompetent **** and their online/cloud-based ****!

    ****!!!

Neither the repair on the control panel nor the update (it is up to date) fixed anything.  Time for Microsoft to fire all of its programmers.  Besides the Office issues, the Win 10 Anniversary update doesn't install for many people.  The Windows Server Essentials R2 for Windows 10 was improperly designed for over a year and now that they correctly designed it as an app instead of an update, it still dies when you update to the Win 10 Anniversary edition.  The uninstall is almost worthless and you manually have to delete logs and scheduled tasks to get it to reinstall properly.  The incompetence is incredible.
