Excel 2016 Mac Problem Bug Linking Cells Between Worksheets

I have multiple worksheets in my excel document. I am trying to link data from a cell on worksheet 2 to a cell on worksheet 1. I enter "=" in the cell on Worksheet 1 and then click on Worksheet 2 and go to the cell that I want to reference/link. When I click on it, nothing happens in the cell on Worksheet 1. Yet the formula appears on a random cell in Worksheet 2. I have had no problem doing this before and the same workbook/document has multiple inter-sheet links from previous work I have done on it. All of a sudden this problem started happening today. Please help me figure this out. Very frustrating. Thank you. Brad.

I’d like to make a summary about this case, so other community members who come across this thread will easily find the useful information:

Issue description:

The formula/value will be in a random cell after linking cells between worksheets when you store the workbooks in Dropbox.

More information:

Original, we have identified the issue will disappear when we go to the Dropbox settings and set the Dropbox badge to "Never show"..

Now, the issue should have gone away. It seems that the issue has been fixed by Dropbox in their latest release. For more information, refer to:

    Hi Microsoft Team,

    I've recently realized having the same problem with typing formula linking cells from different sheets, which now randomly appears anywhere. This is very frustrating and severely affects my daily works.

    Please help fix this issue urgently!!!

    1. When I start a new workbook it works ok - including when I click on the cells to link them. I don't know how long this will last as ok, or what happens after I save it and work on it and save it and work on it, etc. The problem that started this thread all of a sudden started happening. I created a new workbook, but copied the data with formatting, etc. over from the original workbook (that was created in Excel 2011 Mac). It worked ok for the first few times and then it started bugging out again and randomly selecting cells to place the result in as described in my original post to create this thread. There was a comment somewhere on here that it may be when working on Excel 2011 files in Excel 2016 that is causing the problem? I suggest you look further into that as well. HOWEVER, I tried working on the file that I had the bugs with in Excel 2011 again as I still have the program on my computer (the file that was created in Excel 2011 and then worked on in Excel 2016) - and even when working on it in Excel 2011 it still had the same problem as when working on it in Excel 2016. So I don't know if some bug was created when opening and working on the file in Excel 2016. Also, I've been working with Excel 2016 for a while and wasn't happening before. This only started happening around the time that I created this thread so may relate to a recent update either with MS Office, or with OSX.

    Thoughts to ponder and sending you all super good vibes that you find a solution quickly as you have dedicated users here that love your product, but are not handcuffed and can't get their work done because of this bug/issue. Let's get this issue resolved quickly - your fans will love you for it.
