Outlook on android - receiving notifications, but emails don't show in inbox.

I use outlook for android (Motorola Moto G running Android 5.1) and it worked great until a couple of days ago. Now I get notifications of new emails, but the messages don't show up in my inbox. If I click a notification to try and read the email, it says 'Couldn't open message', and takes me back to my inbox, which shows only old messages.

Please help!

This worked.  I didnt uninstall the Microsoft authenticator app, just disabled the battery optimization within the authenticator app itself then my outlook emails all flooded in.

It will be listed in Android apps as just 'Authenticator' that is a blue tile with a white lock on it.  It is used for multi factor authentication login, similar to the Google authenticator app and others like it.

If you have this problem, check your spam folder first. That's where my messages were when I had these symptoms!
