I use outlook for android (Motorola Moto G running Android 5.1) and it worked great until a couple of days ago. Now I get notifications of new emails, but the messages don't show up in my inbox. If I click a notification to try and read the email, it says 'Couldn't open message', and takes me back to my inbox, which shows only old messages.
Please help!

I'm commenting as this issue is now nearly 4 years old and still happening. support always say to reset or delete account. This works temporarily.
I am using an android phone, (Oneplus 5T) Fully updated. Connecting to work exchange server. Get push emails through notification but clicking pop-up takes me to inbox where I am told the messgem cannot be loaded. Have to kill outlook, re-open, then the message will appear. This is ridiculous, and im not reinstalling outlook everyday to fix the issue. Microsoft pull your finger out.
Thanks for the post. Been having this issue only recently on my Note 9. Uninstall/reinstall worked for only a few days. Instead of uninstalling Microsoft Authenticator, I went to setting in Authenticator and turned off battery optimization. Outlook immediately started showing my emails and I can access them. I hadn't turned this on before, so it might be the default setting.
Another option in case you need Authenticator for 2FA.
At me, it looks like, the issue was with the combination of the Microsoft Authenticator app... I had the same problem for a year, too, then uninstalled the Authenticator app a few weeks ago, and since then, Outlook works just perfect on my Android.
I have never even heard of Microsoft Authenticator and can find no sign of it on my device.
I have the same problem. I have to use Outlook for my work e-mail due to institution policy that does not support the calendar syncing without Outlook for Outlook365. Gmail sync with the same app worked fine. This problems showed up a few weeks ago and I cannot get rid of it. I have re-installed the app which fixed it for a few days but the problem recurred with no changes in the settings on my part. Message notifications arrive but the inbox does not update. Resetting the account did not solve it.
I have found a frustrating work around which may be a clue. If I force stop the application from the app manager (remove its background processes from memory) THEN reboot the phone it syncs fine for perhaps a few hours. If I do either of these without the other, no luck.
It's really shameful how Microsoft is not devoting the resources to solving this problem. The tread makes it clear, it's at least a 2+ year old problem.
