Today I’m pleased to announce the release of Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac.

Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac enables you do your best work – anywhere, anytime and with anyone. New, modern versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote have the familiar look and feel of Office, and are thoughtfully designed for Mac. You’ll quickly produce quality documents using new online templates, the Insights pane, and recommended charts. You’ll have access to your docs in the cloud whenever you need them. No more sending documents back and forth in email: it’s easy to share your work and have others review it, since several people can edit the same document simultaneously.

Your Mac device needs to be on OS X 10.10 Yosemite or above.

How do I get Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac?

Office 365 subscribers can get Office 2016 for Mac fromOffice.com/myaccount.  If you don’t have an Office 365 subscription you can purchase from Office.com.

How should I update the Preview build to the Release build?

The update will be available shortly.  You can install the update by going to Help > Check for Updates. Otherwise, the Microsoft Auto-Update Tool will inform you sometime today or tomorrow that an update is available.

    As a Preview tester, I was surprised it was released given the state of the last beta. And as in the preview, Powerpoint 2016 will not open existing .pptx and .ppt files from PPT 2011 on my computer. No error messages result; the files just never open with PowerPoint 2016. They open perfectly well however if I open them with PowerPoint 2011.

    Even more odd, all the files will open in PowerPoint 2016 But only if I email them to myself first. I have no idea why that would be. I have been on the tech-support for several hours today and have so far got nowhere.

    With Excel, it seems harder to get a cell to drag to populate adjacent cells; was much more reliable in 2011. Word also seems glitchier.  

    All these things were reported during the Preview and remain at release. How disappointing.

    What I am inquiring about is using an activation technique for shared computers in an organization with an Office 365 subscription, that do not count against one particular user's device count.

    It's not usable.

    Here's a tip:  Use your software on a machine without an SSD.  My Mac doesn't have one.  It's < 5 months old.  It's an iMac with the 2.6GHz i5 and 8GB RAM with the Platter Drive.

    Really, the load times on these applications are absolutely insane.  Sometimes over 40 seconds to Load Word or Excel.  They're just unusable.

    Then when they load going to certain ribbon tabs can take upwards of 10 seconds for the ribbon to switch and then load.

    Office 2013 runs better on my "in case of emergency" 1.3GHz AMD E-300 Dual Core system with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 than it does on my latest model iMac, even with a 5400 RPM Drive in it.  That's like a 5 year old system or something?

    Something has to be done about the performance.  It's just not usable with that kind of performance.  You end up wasting WAY too much time waiting on your computer or having to keep everything open all the time (can't imagine what that would be like on the 2011 MBPs Apple is still selling (or was until very very recently) with worse specs than my iMac and only 4GB RAM.

    The software looks good, really good.  The feature set was bought up to par, which is great.  The OneDrive integration finally works without trashing your cloud storage or deleting your files, etc.

    But the performance is so bad that it isn't even worth using this over Office 2011 at this point, since if you'd OneDrive you can simply Install the OS X Sync Client and save to those folders on your hard drive.

    I uninstalled it off of my Mac after about 30 minutes because it's not usable, and put Office 2013 it back onto my Windows Notebook.
