Office 2016 keeps reverting color theme back to Colorful

I installed Office 2016 as an upgrade to 2013.  Put the color scheme on grey (because annoyingly the awesome Black went away sometime in the preview.)

Now I have a weird issue where every time I close all of the 2016 applications and then reopen one of the applications, the theme has changed from grey to colorful.  This applies to reboots or just closing them all and then later opening one back up.  Oddly as well today (10/5/2015) I walked away from the computer to talk to a co-worker in the next office.  When I came back, it was on colorful again.  However that is the only time it has changed itself while open.

It seems to work correctly when it is set to Grey.  So for instance, say I open Outlook and change the theme to Grey.  When I open Word or Excel, they are also Grey as they should be.

So I'm just throwing that out there as a potential bug

I was having the issue and I found that when I opened up Outlook and clicked on File ---> Office Account (using Windows 10, Office 365 account), I noticed that it said there was a problem with my Office account on my PC and it had a "Fix It" button. Once I clicked that and logged in with my company credentials, my Office account was fixed and once I set my colors back to black, it has held my colors ever since. Now when I open up Outlook or Word, I no longer have to go back into the Options and change my colors. I know that changing the colors every time you log in is a pain in the you know what so try this and see if that fixes your issue.

    That solved it.  Thank you!

Office 2016 client and Office 365, which is online, should have nothing to do with each other. I own Office 2016 but not a 365 account.  I cannot select the dark theme as an option.  I use dark grey.  It seems the Dark theme is only available to those who have a 365 account, which makes no sense to me.

However, I am glad that at least a solution is available a select group of us.

    Hello everyone,

I've been dealing with this spontaneously-reverting color scheme issue for several months now with my Microsoft Surface Pro 4.  Everyday at work, multiple times a day, I change the color scheme back to my preferred Dark Gray and it consistently reverts back to the default Colorful scheme (aka blue).  Soooo annoying!  I've scoured the web with endless searches of this issue in hopes of finding a forum with the solution... but to no avail (*sad face w/a tear of hopelessness*)

HOWEVER, today, I believe I discovered the cause of this elusive troublemaker!  For the past 90 minutes, I haven't experienced the spontaneous color change and all my Office applications now open as Dark Gray too.  Here's what I found and did...

    1. From Outlook, go to FILE > OFFICE ACCOUNT
    2. Make sure that the Office Background dropdown and Office Theme dropdown reflect your preference.
    3. From this same screen, I noticed what I believe was the culprit causing the issue... Say hello to Microsoft One Drive.

Microsoft's One Drive service was trying to connect to my Office account.  At one time, I did a free trial of Microsoft Office 365 for my Mac.  I may have activated that One Drive service inadvertently or something to that effect but I eventually cancelled the free trial.  When I cancelled the free trial is when I began to experience the spontaneous Office Theme reversion back to default.

Just cancel / stop the One Drive service from attempting to connect to your Office Account.  Hopefully that fixes the issue.  Seems to have fixed it for me.

    I have the same problem.

Office changes the theme with every restart of any Office app like Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.

I set "Dark grey" but "Colorful" always come back :( It's annoying :(

I have Windows 7 SP1 64-bit Enterprise + Office 2016 Professional Plus. Both up to date.

Kelly, I don't know about your problem, but your friend has to pick one or the other Office "color scheme". When you set the color scheme (File menu > Options command) in one Office application it applies to ALL office applications.  So when she switches in one, it applies to the others.  Very frustrating if you are not aware how this feature is designed to work.
