Can’t open or save files after upgrading to Windows 10

We are aware of this problem and will release a fix in an upcoming update. Here are 2 workarounds that have been successful for other Community members.

In Win 10, Right-click on the Start button and choose Run

  1. type %userprofile% into the Run box and click OK to open your local profile folder
  2. Double-click the OneDrive folder
  3. When you get prompted to allow access, click to allow access. OR
  4. In Win 10, Right-click on the Start button and choose Command Prompt (Admin)
  5. Click Yes to the User Account Control prompt
  6. In the command prompt, type the following command:

cd %userprofile%

press Enter on your keyboard 4. In the command prompt, type the following command:

cd OneDrive

press Enter on your keyboard 5. In the command prompt, type the following command:

icacls %userprofile%\OneDrive /inheritance:e

(where %userprofile%\OneDrive is the location of the folder you want to fix)

press Enter on your keyboard

If these methods do not work, OneDrive files can still be accessed from different locations, including phone, tablet and online. Any single file from the OneDrive folder can be copied and pasted onto the desktop

and opened from there.

    thank you so much, this worked for me. now to force run as admin....so i can just get on with my work without the extra steps to start.

    How to force admin start in word everytime.

    None of these fixes worked for me. My problem started after office 2016 was upgraded to. It tries to open everything in protected mode and locks up or says file is corrupt. Take same files to other PC running windows 10 and office 2013, NO PROBLEM. And to think I paid for the office upgrade...

    Microsoft needs to fix this ASAP and make onedrive an option NOT a forced thing.

    I don't want to use OneDrive. I went back to Windows 7 and all of my Office 2013 products are still inoperative. Now what, MS?!

    Thank you so much!! I tried everything else but so far this works. Little nervous I am going to start experiencing some of the other issues but for now I am happy that I can open files.

    The only simple solution I have found for this is still a pain. Right click on the MS Word icon and select run as administrator. When you do this it can save file to the documents folder.
