The title says it all. Whereas in Office 2013 pinned recent items automatically got sorted alphabetically this is no longer the case in any programme in Office 2016. This is extremely frustrating. Any fix?

Who did you ask for feeback before you decided to change the ordering in the first place.
I'm moving fom office 2010 to 2016/365/click to run and dealing with a number of such changes and feature that have been taken away.....
I agree they should be alphabetical
They should not be sorted at all, that is something suited for the Most Recent Used list, not the pinned documents list.
I got Office 2016 installed today and this was one of the first obstacles I discovered.
I am using pinned files (and pinned folders !!, which are missing in Excel 2016 as well) a lot to speed up on my routine jobs.
The workaround I came up with is to create two folders _Files and _Folders as sub-folders of the My Documents folder.
This way, when I click on the This PC option, they are the topmost folders and easy to access. In the _Files folder I have the shortcuts to my pinned files and in the _Folders folder - you guessed it - the shortcuts to my folders I wanted to pin (but cannot, because there is no longer a pinned folders section that I could find.
An additional advantage to this workaround is the fact that you can name the shortcuts any way you like.
I have a folder Data on a Server in Europe, another one in North America, in China, in Japan and in South America. By naming the shortcuts like Data - CN or Data - EU, it is easier to find them quickly.
The one thing that is better in the File Open view of Excel 2016 when compared to Excel 2013 is the fact that the Browse button is now on the left instead of all the way down behind 40 recent files at the very bottom. This is the only improvement I could find so far. Maybe I learn more ...

Yes I agree, the users should be able to choose.
I personnally loved the alphabetical sort and I'm completely lost now in my excel pined files that do not show up in the usual order.
Hope that Microsoft will fix this :)
