How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    I read the thread and see that there is in fact no solution available, either for this or the enlarged size of items on Outlook. So, having wasted money and time on Office 2016, I'm now going to delete it from my computer. The people at Office ought to have signaled that this program was designed for touch screens, not mouse screens. I don't feel like waiting around to see if Office comes up with a solution I can live with. I think it would be useful from now on if Office clearly told potential buyers that the product is either for touch or for mouse.

    This is not helpful at all. Just rehashing all of the features that we are already using does not address the simple request: make the icons smaller, like they were in previous versions. I understand that MS is working on fixing this, but really - who is looking at user interface usability there? How could anyone think that making the icons so big that only a small number of them are visible could possible be an "improvement?" Doesn't MS have a user group that you run these things by?

    I have a touchscreen laptop and if you enable the touch input in Excel/Word/Etc.  It actually makes the buttons bigger and further apart.  Which is great.  If the normal QAT is small.  I think the touch QAT is a little smaller than the normal mouse one.  That totally makes sense!  LOL.

    Why do we have to explain in detail how we use it and how it is negatively impacting us?  Is it not enough to explain that this is a root level issue?

    Why ... think about it this way.  The clown who came up with the idea supported it with a business case explaining why this way is "better" (for MS) than the old way.  The bosses fell for the line and took it hook, line and sinker. They approved spending money to make this change.

    So now we, the real users, have to provide enough information about how bad this idea so that another person can build another business case to get approval to spend more money to undo the change. Or better yet, enhance it to add a USER CONTROLLED option on how it is displayed.  (Please, no auto switch, those auto features are too often just not smart enough).  Don't forget, now our champion in the company has to get the same goofs who made the decision in the first place to admit they oops'd and allow the new fix.  Being shown to be wasting corporate resources could be detrimental to their career and definitely to their year end bonuses!

    So, PLEASE, invest 2 minutes to copy and paste the big para of your above reply into the user voice site.  The best way to convince MS is lots of user feedback.
