How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

Thanks again for the clear feedback, both here and on UserVoice - keep it coming!

Cheers...pc

if you move the QAT below the ribbon it displays in color.

Cool.  It kinda works.  It does work in White and Colorful, but not Dark Grey (in Word 2016, not 365).

So "color" works in 2016. Now they just have to fix it in the places it is not working !

NOW, how to get the icons back in COLOR?!

There is nothing we can do to fix that MS "improvement" to make Office "friendly" for 7" smart phones.

All you can do is add your comment and vote(s) to this suggestion I've already made at the uservoice site:

QAT buttons not showing custom images https://office.uservoice.com/forums/285186-general/suggestions/12512571-qat-buttons-not-showing-custom-images

MS has setup subsites on the "uservoice" forum as a place that they activately monitor for user submitted suggestions, bug reports and feature requests.

"UserVoice.com" - MS Suggestion box sites

If you have an (other) feature suggestions to make for various MS products, here is a longer collection of MS UserVoice.com sites:

After hours of frustration, I found the solution to the nasty QAT spacing. Right-click on the QAT down arrow. Add Touch/Mouse Mode to the QAT. Click on the icon's down arrow and select Mouse. Ta-Da! in Mouse mode we've got the old spacing back. In Tablet mode the spacing wides for touch. NOW, how to get the icons back in COLOR?!
