How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

     I remove the update backup files, and run defrag.  Keeps my SSD from overloading. 

    Hate to rain on your parade Mountain, but this isn't a "start", it is probably the finish, you know "... 3 steps backward, 1 forward ... " .  Now that they have (30%) "fixed" the problem, I doubt they will do any more.  Unfortunately it appears that MS firmly has it's (tunnel) "vision" stuck on the "new market" of smartphones/tablets, to the detriment of its existing customers using PC's. 

    Do NOT run Defrag on **SSD'**s . SSDs have a limited number of write operations on each memory cell.  Defragging them burns up writes.  Let the SSD handle it's own organization.  Defrag does not help SDD read time due to the way it does reads, there is no is no spinning disk that needs a moving arm to perform reads with.

    In theory, Windows is smart enough to not do automatic defrag on SSDs, but it will allow you to do manual defrags.

    I have updates set for manual installation.  Bleepingcomputer has a whole thread devoted to which updates to install. Nothing mentioned on them yet.   I haven't paid much attention to all the unnecessary stuff.  There was a bunch waiting this morning, so I installed them all.  One thing I like about 8 (and 10) is the disk cleanup option.  I remove the update backup files, and run defrag.  Keeps my SSD from overloading.

    The new interface is an nice improvement to to the QAT.  Icon space is now down to twice as wide, vs.  3 times as wide before.
