How to reduce the size of quick access toolbar icons? (Office 2016)

With the update to Office 2016 the Quick Access Toolbar icons were enlarged.

I used to have a filled Quick Access toolbar for Excel and now they do not fit defeating the purpose.

Is there any way to reduce the size of Quick Access Toolbar items?

Folks, our shared UX controls team have been following this thread, as well as your requests on UserVoice and are spinning up some work to address your concerns. I can't promise a specific date for getting this work out to you all, but they recognize the impact this has had on those of you who work with customized QAT and are moving very quickly.

When they're done you'll see the improvement arrive as part of the regular updates we send all subscription customers.

    Patrick assures us that they are working on it.   This icon thing is particularly pernicious for excel, if you need to use a command that has to have the icons redisplayed.  Not only are they larger, their lack of a border makes them blend into the background.   This is one reason why I insist on using Word 2010.  Which by the way, often gets overridden as default when certain updates occur. So I first uninstall Word 2010, then unreg Word 2016, then install Word 2010 with Paint (which current version totally sucks as well).  Now not only is cleartype back, but all of my icons, in their pretty row. Congratulations MS, you not only made them twice as large than they need to be, it is actually harder to see the ones you can get.  What a cluster. I swear the GUI folks are a bunch of kids brought up on Android.  Fine for the phone maybe, but forget it for real production.  

    Patrick, how soon are we going to see a real desktop version of Office? I am thinking of getting a Surface, but if  I cannot get a clean interface for a large monitor, I am sticking with my Dell M6700.

    The icons may be the same size as before, but lots of extra blank space has been added on either side.  I'll state the obvious here -- can you just return them to the size they were and not make them microscopically small with all the extra blank space?  Thank you.

    Update.  So I used jay Freedmans noreg http://jay-freedman.info/norereg.html method, applied to both versions.  Still no luck.  So uninstalled word10, and reinstalled.  

    It all works now!!!! Yippee.  What a chore.  At least I get to screen my updates now.  Go to bleepingcomputer.com for info from folks that will screen out which ones are really worthwhile.  They send an email everytime one comes around to let you know which ones to install.

    Well it was all running fine until the latest win10 update automatically installed last night.  Now it doesn't link to winword10 anymore.  No matter what I do with unregserver/regserver commands.   I rebooted, and no luck.  So I even tried to "open with", and typed in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\winword.exe, and still comes up with Word16.  ****?  So I went to system restore, and lo and behold, when upgrading to 10, the system restore setting was turned off by default.  ****?  So no luck there.  Almost ready to completely rebuild the installation.  

    MS has to be the most spiteful organization ever created.  Foisting this piece of **** office product on us  in the first place, and then making it impossible to use superior software they themselves used to make!

    I cannot fathom what goes through the developers heads.  If there was any competition, MS would be bankrupt.  Is there any hope for a desktop version of Office16 with cleartype and icons not made with crayons?
