Using pen as mouse instead of Inking

Before my latest update in Word 2016, I was able to use my Pen as a mouse in my documents.  Now it only inks in my documents.  Selecting the top function of optimize spacing between commands (mouse or touch) does not help.  Selecting Draw tab and pressing select objects does nothing either.  Any suggestions out there?

UPDATE 4/8:

We have started to roll out the change that also adds the Select button to the Draw tab (#1 in my original email below), so if you want to continue to use your pen to ink by default you can do that, and now use that button to use the pen for selection temporarily.  Of course if you want to use the pen to select by default, the preference we added in the Options dialog and detailed below allows you to do that.

UPDATE 3/15:

I wanted to let everyone know that in the update to Office that started rolling out to Insiders today, you will find a new preference in the Options dialog to allow you to make the pen select instead of ink by default.  Enabling this preference will make the pen function exactly like it did before, plus you can use the options on the Draw tab if you do decide you want to ink.  If you are an Office Insider (which anyone can join), you should get this update within the next day or so.  If you are not an Office Insider, it may take another week or two to reach you.

This is a per-app preference, so you can enable selection by default in Excel for instance while leaving ink as the default in Word and PowerPoint, or you can switch all three.  To access this preference select File > Options, and then in the Options dialog select Advanced and check ‘Use pen to select and interact with content by default’ in the new Pen section.

We’ll be releasing the second piece (#1 below), which is the ability to toggle on pen selection via the Draw tab for those that only want to use the pen to select occasionally, with the next monthly update.

Thanks again to all of you for your feedback, and we hope this change addresses your concerns.

ORIGINAL:

I wanted to first thank all of you for your feedback both here, and on our UserVoice site.  We’ve heard you loud and clear, and as a result we are actively working on two changes:

  1. For people that want to use the pen as a precise pointer temporarily, we will introduce the ability to do that via a button on the Draw tab.  This will keep the new default of having the pen ink on the document canvas, but give the ability to use the pen to do selection when needed.
  2. For people that want or need to use the pen like a mouse by default, we will also add a new preference to the Options dialog that will allow you to restore the previous behavior.  If you want to ink, that will be easier than before because you’ll be able to just tap a pen on the Draw tab and start inking, but you will be able to set your default behavior to be that the pen selects, just like it was before the update.

We are actively working on making these changes so that we can get them out to you as soon as possible.  Note that you may see #2 (the preference in the Options dialog) appear first, because we are prioritizing getting that change to you based on your feedback.

I will keep this post updated with the latest status, or you can follow along at one (or all) of the three relevant UserVoice topics: Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

In addition, if you’d like to get these changes even before they are officially released to everyone, please consider joining our Office Insidersprogram.  It’s a great way to preview the upcoming changes and help provide us with feedback early.

Thanks again,

Dan

Version 16.0.6741.2017 contains a checkbox for "Use the pen to select and interact with content by default" under the Pen heading in File>Options>Advanced.

I don't know about others but I've reverted to the version prior to the change in pen functionality and then turned off automatic updates.  I think I'll wait until this update gets released to all users before I turned auto updates back on again.

Thank you for your suggestions. I/we are aware of the patch to allow you to manually undo what has been done to you without your consent of forewarning on a per user / per application basis.

So is my boss. He is unimpressed. He is was adamant that we reverted all of our Office 2016 installations back to 2013 to avoid this issue completely. The office 265 subscriptions are being terminated and we are reverting back as far as we can to 'disconnected' Office. The only thing that might remain is skype for business, somehow. The disastrous direction Microsoft are taking their flagship product is pushing our organisation business platforms away from what was once a purely Microsoft shop.

He has also instructed me to to set up the machine to somehow DISABLE updates until Microsoft come to their collective senses about this thoroughly unprofessional behaviour they are engaged in. The problem I/we face is not now, its the future.  This is currently managed by self referencing all of the Microsoft update and diagnostic telemetry sites and a few of the update distribution sites to an address of 0.0.0.0 in our hosts file. We will take the mild security risk this may pose over the large functionality risk this definitely poses with Microsoft in its holier than thou 'we know best' attitude.

When Microsoft abandoned the optional update approach they opened the door for this scenario an it is coming home to roost very soon. I am hearing grumbles from other people like myself in other organisations that are much bigger consumers of office that they are worried sick over thee sorts of changes and are considering moving away from office as well. Windows 10 is at the root of all of this. One of our guys is working hard on finding a way to implement Windows 7 on a surface so we can get control back.

Will Microsoft retrospectively screw up 2013 if we leave updates turned on. We seem to have little control over undoing such damage when it occurs.

The level of users we have are not interested in fiddling about with esoteric settings here there and everywhere they want it to just work like it did before. There's no system/office level utility to change this, Why not.

I am getting a mountain of flack over this issue and am posting that flack all over the place to let Microsoft know what enemies they are generating over such stupidly ill-conceived forced changes of this nature. My boss really wants to punch the office product manager in the face over this.

We spent ~2000 per person getting surface pro 4's and then some more to get Office 365 subscriptions and then Microsoft BROKE it all by doing this. His words not mine, but I agree. In our business if we ever did anything that disrupted our clients to this level we wouldn't have any. Microsoft have a very big lesson to learn. They are not too big to fail.

The impact of this is we are now considering shifting our entire workforce over to Open Office!
