This is Bryan from the Office team. We are extremely sorry to learn that some of you are running into an issue with Office after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 where some of your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents are failing to open with various error messages, such as:

On Monday, a fix went out to all Office 2013 Click-to-Run users that fixed the Protected View issue that was preventing some files from opening. For those users, the Office applications would launch and even creating new documents worked fine; however, opening some files resulted in various error messages like above. If you haven't already been prompted to install the August update, you can manually trigger by going into an Office application like Word, then select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
There are other known issues that could also cause similar error messages, but those are not related to the specific Protected View issue. Teams are working hard to determine the root cause and resolve those issues. For instance, if you are running Windows 10 and Office is running in Windows compatibility mode for a prior version, you likely will also experience issues.

This answer is usless, the new start display is not user friendly or intuitive. I would rather go back to windows 7.
Have the Windows 10 from Windows 7 all done and things were working fine. (Office 2010 full suite) yesterday I went ahead with the discounted offer to upgrade to Windows 365/Office 2016. So today I can't keep Outlook open - the document cache has stopped working - looking for help on the forums your link appeared (the symptoms seem to be similar).
My business is at a standstill until Outlook works - your workarounds here do nothing - HELP!!!
Word opens for a second then immediately dies after upgrading from Win 7 to Win 10. It's very difficult to know if Word's Normal.doc* could be deleted or something done to fix this because search can't find that file. I can't monkey around with Word open: Word won't stay open.
How ironic that I was trying to use Word to write to Satya Nadella.
Problems with Windows 10 are deeper. Always , when an automatic, mandatory, not avoidable, win10 upgrade is installed Office 2010 shows problems.
The main one is that it stops to work when launching a printing.
Other are that doesn't save the files or gets a lot of time (tenth of minutes) to answer!!!!!
Trying to reinstall, for instance, the virtual printer for pdf doesn't get any effect and doesn't solves the issue.
We don't use the PC to play or to watch pictures, but to work and this is a severe loss of productivity!!!!
Microsoft pay we back for it?

Fantastic Paul - your solution saved my day (and my business from missing an important deadline). I simply adapted to my Excel 2013 problem (was working fine the night before)
Followed your steps 1 - 6 except:
For step 3 right clicked on C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\excel.exe
For step 5 selected my previous Windows 8 version (from the problematic Windows 10)
...And I thought MS had finally gotten something right for a change...
