Install Office 2016 OEM without Live account

I manage IT services for several small businesses and periodically need to purchase new computers with Office. I just purchased a new Dell laptop with the OEM version of Office 2016 Home & Business. It will not let me activate it without adding it to a MS account.

I know this is a perennial question, beginning with Office 2013, that is a major headache for independent technical consultants that support small businesses, as I do. But I have never seen a solid answer as to how to get this installed on the computer without the MS account--just a lot of try this, try that. This is NOT Office 365, just Office H & B 2016!

 I will not:

  • Add it to my MS account, or it will be forever stuck to me--which is inappropriate, since I will not own the computer or software once I am paid for the system by my client.
  • Make my client set up a MS account just for this.
  • Pry into my client's information to get his MS account information (if he even has one).

But I must have Office installed, activated, and updated before I give the system to my client. The activation dialog, in fact, gives me the option of using a product key instead of a login, but then proceeds to "Redeem Online"--which I believe will end up with the same result that requires a MS account.

At this point, I now have a bigger issue. I backed up the Program Data folder that contains the cached Office installation files, then uninstalled MS Office, hoping that a reinstall would give me some option to truly install without being forced to figure out a MS account for my client. The uninstallation removed the original setup folders. Good thing I backed it up, but then when I reinstall from any of those, it installs Office 2013, not Office 2016. And while it still validates the key when I click the option to use a key instead of a logon, it (as before) takes me to "Redeem Online".

Hello, Microsoft: this issue alone has just eliminated my entire profit from this project, given the time I have already spent trying to get this done, then uninstalling and attempting to reinstall.

I know there are versions that can be activated without a MS account, but I do not buy in bulk and can never seem to figure out which is which.

How do I get this installed for my client without being required to use a MS account?

I am having the same problem, I  had 4 new laptops and ordered Microsoft Office pro 2016 and cannot activate without a Microsoft account. I created a microsoft account and activated 3 of them, and then it told me the fourth cannot be activated because the key had been used the maximum amount of times, I have 4 Keys and labeled the laptops and keys before using them.  ****

As you can see from this discussion, it has been a problem since 2016 was released. Brand new keys, still in sealed package that have been registered by someone else beforehand.

You can contact MS Support to find out the email used to register:

You don’t know the Email, but do know the Product Key

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/I-can-t-remember-the-Microsoft-account-I-use-with-Office-eba0b4a2-c0ae-472c-99f6-bc63ee2425a8

this page assumes you have the product key, it displays a part of the email address for you to recognize and guess the rest.

you don’t know email associated with the Account contact MS Support

Since the problem is related to the email account associated with Office suite, I suggest you to contact Microsoft following steps mentioned below information and address this issue:

    1. Go to the following link and click on Getting Help > Contact Customer Support. https://commerce.microsoft.com/PaymentHub/help
    2. Now under Product select Office 365 Home Premium> Security, Privacy and Accounts>Managing my Account.
    3. You need to click on Start chat or Request a call option to talk to representative.

But other than that MS is not going to provide you with any help. Since you bought it from the builder, you will have to fight with them to replace the key for you. At least one person reported they eventually got a replacement.

I have spent so much time trying to activate Office 2016 on various computers, I can't decide between continuing with MS Office products or just moving to Open Office.  I finally, on my last time to activate from a key, decided that the option to activate by phone is the fastest way.  You call the 800 number and tell them you're having problems activating, give them the key, and they read back a 50 character activation that you type as they read it (actually it's a machine reading it, as I recall).  The key plus Microsoft account requirement is outrageously difficult.  You paid your money, so you should be able to use the product without hours of registration, emails, and BUGS in the Microsoft system.

The real fun comes when you have to re-install Office 2016

Thought I had a good system, create a dummy outlook.com account, with user name of dell[servicetag]@outlook.com (these are laptops I have no idea who they will be assigned to, the people that do have no email accounts associated with the business, etc)

Soooo....... had to re-install Office today for a replaced hard drive and the dummy outlook.com account live.com account has been been suspended for suspicious activity of sending too many emails (bear in mind, the only time it was used was to verify account to INSTALL Office)

Trying to verify the account gave me grief, had to use my cell number to verify account and it has been used too many times for outlook.com account verification (yes, a LOT, have deal with about 20 of these monsters)

Thank you Micro$haft for making me spend time I cannot in conscience  bill my client for, I still cannot re-stall Office

    f#%k

Snarli, do you think this is all part of a plan to convince customers to give up on purchase and go to subscription mode?  Clearly, this is not something MS could get away with if they had real competitors.  I have exactly the same problem you do with spending time that I can't bill.
