I cannot get Excel 2016 to open and run a file by clicking on the file from File Explorer. Is there a bug?

Having the same issues with Excel (with Excel only, Word PowerPoint OK)

    HP Z440

Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (came installed on machine)

Office Home + Business 2016 (T5D-02374) - retail - Bought from reputable supplier

All files open OK from within Excel  -  .xls .xlsx

All files open from explorer, when double clicked (or Right click / open) so long as Excel is already started (bit of a pain)

All files will not open from explorer, when double clicked if excel is not started

All files being - .xls made on this machine with old office 2007

                           - .xls & .xlsx  imported

                           - .xlsx files made on this machine from old .xls files using "save as" .xlsx

When double clicking I get the menu's across the top and a green box saying "starting" in the middle of the screen

I can move through the menu's and even do a "save as" which works (even though I can't open it properly)

I have done all (yes all)of the above recommended fix's to no avail

    quick repair - both types

    uninstall /reinstall 32 & 64 bit

DDE and all of the other settings options

Will Microsoft please sort I am getting rather peeved

5 hours of wasted time so far

    5 hours of lost pay

I hate spending money, least of all on products that don't work or haven't been tested properly

    Regards : Mr Grumpy

    PS : can anyone help

    I fixed it.

Installed office 2016 again and the in windows 10 file association clicking on .xls default app adobe reader gave me excel 2016 as a choice for default app.  Selected it and now it works fine again.

Waste of an afternoon mucking around searching for a fix for what is apparently some kind of bug in Office 2016.  Odd that each time you repair or re-install over the top it requests your key again.

This problem isn't happening on my laptop with Win 10, only on my desktop with Win 8 (or is it 7)? Anyway, it seems be a bug in Excel 2016 that wasn't caught when testing on older operating systems

It's happening on my win10 system and it might be an excel 2016 bug but it certainly is a windows 10 issue that I can't change the default app on a file association.
