How do I convert files created on a vista system with .wps extensions to be read/used in word 2016. Unable to find any converters on the office web site.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12 should work with 64 bit Windows, but may not work with 64 bit versions of Word. It only works with files from Works versions 6 to 9. For earlier Works versions you will need the very old filters linked from the downloads page of my web site.
Alternatively, use File Merlin to convert the files to Word format.
don't know if I'm missing something but on my wps documents (using home and student 2007), before I transferred them to my new computer with home and student 2016, I clicked save as, and instead of choosing wps I chose .doc....
the home and student 2016 then accepted them in that format
WorksConv.EXE is no longer supported by Microsoft.
The link on my web site http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm (which points to the File Hippo page), does not require any purchase. There may be no end of advertising on the page, but the file itself is linked from the link shown below.
Click this link and you'll get a page with more advertising, and an annoying video, but the prompt to save the file will be forthcoming (see below).
The file in question, stored as filename.exe, is the same as WorksConv.exe, as you will see at the security warning when you execute the file, before Windows will install it.
One of the MOST frustrating things about consulting with people within the Microsoft community is that many have opinions of what to do to correct a problem, but few suggestions ever work. This is mostly due to lack of technical expertise or formal training AND lack of knowledge about all the MS product out there (my version of MS Office 365 - Word did NOT have the Works 6-9 converter built into it apparently). There also seems to be a great reluctance to put a hyperlink into advice to show people where to find the solution/drivers/exe file, etc....
Respectfully, the link that other moderators provided to Hippo Files ... well, that is a blatant effort by a scammer/spammer to get people to sign up to Hippo files... it MAY work but as far as I am concerned is not legit. MS files and fixes should come from an approved MS site that does not require a special subscription or sign up or downloading their unique software. That being said, the WorksConv.exe file does not seem to exist at MS Support anymore. The WorksConv.exe was/is a freeware file that Microsoft provided to fix a problem... but it seems to have been dropped from MS sites at this time. You should NOT have to sign up for HippoFile in order to get it; so beware bad advice.
As of September 23, 2016 the only free download I have located of WorksConv.exe can be found at ComputerHope website - a free computer help and info website: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001017.htm . I am not endorsing this website - but at least it seems run by experienced folks that understand the need for others to access certain files, so I am willing to give it my tacit approval (slight nod of approval with further inspection of the site to follow). It is paid for through commercial advertising on the top/bottom of the page. Another link provided by Suzanne Barnhill in this post is: http://www.gmayor.com/downloads.htm but I have not had 100% success there.

The program worked for me and was virus-free according to my AVS - I am using Windows 10 and MS Office/Word 2016. It was a quick and seemless install.
