How do I convert files created on a vista system with .wps extensions to be read/used in word 2016. Unable to find any converters on the office web site.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=12 should work with 64 bit Windows, but may not work with 64 bit versions of Word. It only works with files from Works versions 6 to 9. For earlier Works versions you will need the very old filters linked from the downloads page of my web site.
Alternatively, use File Merlin to convert the files to Word format.
This may not work for everyone, OpenOffice itself no longer appears to work natively either. There is on sourceforge.net a set of libraries for OpenOffice:

The good news
You upload a .wps file and it converts it to an ODT file at the following site:
http://libwps.sourceforge.net/convertWPS.html
Then, import the ODT file after reading the bad news...
The bad news
For me, the ODT file could not be opened in Word 2010. I got "file corruption" messages and even trying to recover the content did nothing. Possibly because of the graphics in the file, I really don't know. I had to install OpenOffice, that opened the document fine, I could then save in whichever format I wanted...

I was able to successfully open the files after I installed the converter in both office 2016, and office 2003. The office 2016 is the home and student version. The only other option I can think of is to try Open office. You can download this from Openoffice.org. This software reads and writes word files, but I do not know if it will read .wks files. I would recommend you get a copy of home/student office 2016. Good luck.
