Excel (Office 365): Program works, but splash screen won't disappear

Recently, I noticed that when I open Excel for Office 365, the program opens and runs fine, but the splash screen doesn't disappear. It remains in the background once the program starts. Other windows open on top of it, it's just annoying that it won't go away. I can minimize and and move it around, but that's it. I unchecked the box next to "Show the start screen when this application starts", but it still shows up. Updating Office also didn't help. It only seems to be a problem with Excel as neither Word nor PowerPoint has this issue.

I'm sorry that you were encountering this issue and for any inconvenience it may have caused.

This issue was occurring if you had disabled the "Show start screen" (to show a new blank workbook in Excel on boot) and had any add-in enabled.

We have addressed this issue in the latest release of Excel which is now available through Update.

    Hello Vardhaman,

    This issue is starting to become cloudy because people aren't reading the earlier posts. In my earlier responses to MS diagnostic requests, I clearly stated that this problem happens for any individual add-in, and specifically listed each of the individual add-ins that I tested.  Earlier than that, I also reported a bug with the repair function (which I ran based on a MS request) which left me with Office 365 completely uninstalled.  After reinstalling, the the problem remained.  I am running the 64 bit version that both you and Michael have listed, and the problem occurs every time I've launched Excel several times per day for at least a month.  The problem started a few updates ago; it did not start with my original 2016 installation.

    In one of my earlier posts, you will see the different messages that remain on the splash screen for several iterations.  This should provide sufficient detail for someone to start looking at where this problem is occurring.  This is clearly not an add-in problem since the add-ins I use have been in place for virtually every version of Excel I've used over the last few years.  Please check the earlier information before asking Michael to run your repair utility and potentially end up having to reinstall manually.

    P.S. We just tested this on the 64-bit version of Excel and also reproduced the issue, so it's not a result of bitness.

    Hi Vardhaman,

    I am using the 32-bit version of Office 2016 (version 16.0.6769.2015) - not the 64-bit version - on a 64-bit machine. I updated Office few days ago - hoping this would be fixed - and can reproduce reliably.

    I can also reproduce it on ALL of my colleague's machines in my office (using the same setup), so I'm confident this is not an issue with my setup. It's a bug.

    If you cannot reproduce it on the same setup I will undertake repairs, etc., but at this stage you haven't tried reproducing it on my exact setup so I'm wary of investing time in this until you have.

    We tested the issue on Excel version 16.0.6769.2015, 64-bit and we could not reproduce the issue.

    Repair the Office suite following instructions mentioned in the article below  and verify the result.
