Red X on slide thumbnails in Master View

In PowerPoint 2013, in the presentation I'm creating, the thumbnails view doesn't show the thumbnails, but instead displays a large red X on every slide. The slides look fine in the slide view itself.

Diagnosis and recommendations welcome.

    Or it hasn't fixed it for the edition of Office that you have.

    Again, it may depend on which specific version you have.  Specifically, if you have one of the versions that installs itself over the internet, it can be set to auto-update, and MS releases updates quite often.

    If you have the version that installs from a CD or an MSI file, there will be much less frequent updates and fixes for specific problems like this will generally have to wait until the next hotfix or service pack.

    Start PowerPoint, go to File | Account.

    If it says "Product Activated" on the right and there's only an "About PowerPoint" button, you have an MSI version, which might explain why no update's available.

    Otherwise, it'll say something about "Subscription version" and there'll be an additional button with update options.

    I have version 15.0.4623.1000 and the problem just re-occurred today.

    Ran an up-date, but the system says I am up-to-date.

    Looks like MS hasn't yet fixed the problem......

    As Steve is hinting the update numbers are confusing. If you have the 64 bit msi installed version 15.0.4615.1000 is the updated version but it will usually also show 15.0.4613.1000!

    Whether you can use a downloadable update or not may (I'm not positive of this, mind) depend on which edition of 2013 you have.  Can you post a screenshot of what you see in File | Account?

    Steve,

    What you are saying seems to make perfect sense.  While I have seen the problem working with documents from OneDrive and Dropbox, I have also seen the problem when working from a document that was attached to an email and not technically saved on my machine or one of my drives.  

    I looked at my version of PowerPoint and it is 15.0.4615.1000. But when I download the update for the KB you reference I receive the message that the update is already installed.  So it looks like there might be a problem with MS version numbers or something else is going on.
